Musical Memories

Post by karl » Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:31 am

As there is a wide age group here I can't limit this to the 60's so I will say what records did you buy in your youth that you still enjoy today - this includes 45's & albums, you can add as many as you like and return as and when you remember titles.

To start the ball rolling here's mine;-

Out Of Time - Chris Farlowe
Island Of Dreams - The Springfields
Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
Everything I Am - Plastic Penny
Ev'rythings Coming Up Dusty (LP)
Can't Get Used To Losing You - Andy Williams
I Want To Stay Here - Steve & Eydie
All You Need Is Love - The Beatles
You're My World - Cilla Black
You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes
I Only Want To Be With You - Dusty
We're Gonna Change The World - Matt Monro
It's All Over Now - Rolling Stones
Let's Think About Living - Bob Luman
Road Runner - Jr Walker & The All Stars
Hit Maker (LP - Burt Bacharach)

The first 78's I bought were mainly Elvis Presley--"Teddy Bear" "All Shook up" "Heartbreak Hotel" etc etc.

I rarely bought Lps, but the first ones I bought were

CAROUSEL FILM SOUNDTRACK
JOHNNY MATHIS-RHYTHMS AND BALLADS OF BROADWAY
EDDIE FISHER-ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS
CLIFF RICHARD--forget the title.

It was many years before I had a really big collection, I only had a little Lp player-dansette, I think it was called, so I guess the sound was not too good.

I had a 10 year gap in buying and listening to music, and it started again when I met George--we bought a music-centre, which at the time was very new and modern, and I tended to buy Lps by Manuel, James Last , Geoff Love etc etc. Just typical easy listening music. Very few vocalists, just the occasional Johnny Mathis Lp.

Hmm the first records I played were my parents lps. Though my Dad claims as soon as I saw The Monkees on the television it signaled the decline to his record buying. Now he claims when I was a kid and we'd go to the store and to the record section he said as long as it had long hair, weird clothes and had song titles that were horrible I'd want it. So I'd say the lps from childhood would be The Monkees, The Beatles, The Mamas and The Papas and all the other 60's British and American bands.

Wow Karl, you really have a hodge podge of 45's!! Like I always say my record collection is equivalent to a photograph album of my life. Did you also save your lunch money or allowance to buy records? LOL I always managed to get get my Mum or Dad to buy them for me or sometimes my eldest Sister, being the baby I was a spoiled, kinda like the charachter Veruca Salt in the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but not as bad. Ha ha!!

The next music I bought was a load of 7" singles of 60's music. They had loads of them in our local paper shop--all ex jukebox so really cheap--I would buy all George's favourites and copy them onto cd's for him, that we would play in the car---anything by The Beatles, Roy Orbison, the Hollies. plus stuff like

Space Oddity---David Bowie
Melting Pot--Blue Mink
The Boxer--Simon & Garfunkel
Here there and Everywhere--Emmy Lou Harris
The Isralites--Desmond Decker
Sweets for my sweet-The Searchers
I can't let Maggie go--Honey bus

Plus loads more---I made up at least 10 cassettes, purely of 45's.

Mariana, my Dad would record my 45's onto a reel tape and also a cassette as soon as we came home from the store and played them on his stereo the first go round so I could play the 45's on my crappy phonograph after them being recorded. So half of his reel tapes comprises of my 45's.

My sister had a reel to reel tape--she copied music from the radio--but I do not know what happened to them.

In the fifties, my musical memories were in my 45s & LPs that were mainly ballads by the crooners and mellow songstresses--

Some of these were: Because of You - Tony Bennett
If , Wanted, Without a Song- Perry Como
I'm Yours, I'll Walk Alone, Hold My Hand- Don Cornell
Here in My Heart, I Love You Because - Al Martino
Hey There - Rosemary Clooney
Changing Partners - Patti Page
You Don't Know Me, Al Di La- Jerry Vale
The Finger of Suspicion, A Blossom Fell - Dickie Valentine
Only You, Twilight Time - The Platters
Love Me Tender, Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis
The Wonder of You - Ronnie Hilton (I have this on a Ronnie CD, Karl)

Elvis did not record The Wonder Of You in the 50's Henry, it was much later - however Ronnie Hilton recorded the song in that era and it's a far superior record.
