Hi Terence,

Thought I would follow up your post on Something

As I said, I used to prefer Shirley Bassey's version too, but I am loathe now to classify anything as "the definitive version" for the fact that improving technology over the years allows re-workings of great songs that can never be achieved by the original artists, which is in a way rather unfair. Most of them have no chance to re-record using better technology. My Beatles recording of Something is on CD but obviously taken from the original Parlophone mono recording which severely limits the dynamic range. Also, as I have continued to grow in age, size and wisdom (the only thing not growing anymore is the hair on my head   ) my perception has changed to be far more tolerant of all things in life and look for appreciation everywhere.

Of course we all know that our particular liking for a specific version is not just based on the performance, but on our own lives - what it means to us, what we were doing at the time we heard it etc. etc. The switch for me to the original recording came after George Harrison died and I watched the tribute concert for him on TV, where various people like Clapton and McCartney performed Something. It made me go back to listen the original version and I was smitten by the poignancy more than the big sound and awesome vocals of the Bassey version. Must get the DVD of that concert by the way.....

I also have recordings of Something by Frank Sinatra and Joe Cocker, which come much further down my own list of faves.

Hi Terrajel

I read somewhere that Shirley Bassey first heard the song SOMETHING not from the Beatles but on American TV when Peggy Lee sang it. She only caught part of the song, loved it and hunted it down.
Peg's recorded version has been released on CD but listening to it, you wouldn't know what it was that La Bassey heard. Peggy Lee had a special voice but it could not do justice to this song as she does not have the range or power.

I have friends who say that Bassey is unable to emote sensitively or in a nuanced mode. They claim she can only belt. In reply, I always ask them to listen to her sing Janis Ian's JESSE from her GOOD BAD BUT BEAUTIFUL album now on CD.

Hi Marian, we agree that Neil Sedaka is a brilliant songwriter and another artist who simply warms to his audience.
He of course composed Tony Christies Amarillo and received an award from The Guiness World Record for the best selling single of the 21st Century.
Terra we also remembered seeing Brian Wilson at the Party at the Park but wondered if it was a model of him that had been smuggled in from Madame Tussaud's. The music was good though.

Hello everyone. One of my all time favourite songs is a song I bet not many of you have heard of before, but I absolutely love it. It's a power-pop ballad from 1979, by a British group I have mentioned on here before. Their lead singer is James Warren. Their biggest hit single was "Everybodys Got To Learn Sometimes" but my favourite song by this group got to #10 I believe, in the charts of the above mentioned year. Just about the best POP song ever recorded in my opinion, as it still gives me tingles when I listen to it. The group - THE KORGIS The song - IF I HAD YOU 8) 8) 8) 8)
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Hi Robert--firstly, let me tell you that I heard James Morrison on the radio the other day---and I have heard him before---I just did not know that was his name.

There seems to be a distinct absence of any mention of Country music , anywhere on this forum.

I must admit that I am not a huge fan of Country Music.

But my fave country singer recorded a beautiful song, that was covered by Michael Ball recently, but although he does a really nice version, it is not as good as this one.

The singer is Reba Mcentire, and the song is called "The Greatest Man I never Knew"--a real tear jerker, but so beautifully sung by Reba.

Country

Hi Marian

The title of the Reba song sounds promising. However Reba has that country twang in her voice which I don't like as it reminds me of small dusty American towns. It is funny but there are some wonderful country singers like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Dottie West and Barbara Mandrell that are so appealing. Can't explain it well except to say that I like the new breed of country-pop singers like Trisha Yearwood better.

Hi Terence---it is a beautiful song that Reba sings--the song tells the story of a son or daughter, and their father. I do not think her voice is quite as "country" as some others---She was over here some time ago, singing as part of a Beatles tribute--I think she sang "If I fell".

Yes Robert---you are quite correct, Willie Nelson was mentioned recently---but apart from that , there have been very few--if any.

I liked Reba McEntire's very first single, Last Night Ev'ry Night, which peaked in the 30s on the US country chart. I had so much promise for her because that first song was so good. Since then I haven't liked one song she's recorded! That's very strange, because usually there's something I like, but not with her.

When I get a chance I'll list some of my favourite country singers in another message.
