Hi Yes-I do know this one--but at the moment it will not come to me.

I must think about this one--unless someone beats me to it!!

I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

This one is driving me mad, because I know that I know it very well. I think my brain has stopped working temporarily!!

Marian and Robert. Recorded by many but perhaps mostly associated with Bing. But.... Matt has recorded it too.

Diane, Marian's going to kick herself when it comes to her.
Well here's a clue. The title of this song was made for a brilliant TV series in the Seventies with Bob Hoskins. :)

Oh Mike--I had just got it "Pennies from Heaven", and then I scrolled down to see that you had got it first. I guess the clue made it easier.

Your turn Mike, to give us one to guess.

Or are you not seeing things too clear
Are you too much in love hear
Is it all going in one ear, and out of the other

Mike - you've confused me. This is the opening verse game. You submitted a line from the song "Hey There" from The Pajama Game. But it's not the opening verse, which starts with something like: "Lately when I'm in my room..."

But we'll give you a break this time, since you just created the new gran game.

Since I knew Hey There, I'll submit an opening verse. It's easy.

Des yeux qui font baisser les miens,
Un rir' qui se perd sur sa bouch',
Voila le portrait, sans retouch',
De l'homme auquel j'appartiens.

Very sorry to have confused you Paul. Not having joined in this game before I did have a look at the start of this thread before posting the verse, and it didn't mention anything about an opening verse.

The version I know of this song is by Giselle Mackenzie, and opens straight with the title line which would have been a bit of a giveaway! Rosemary Clooneys version does as well. It maybe in the show that it comes from that there is a preamble leading to the song, and if that is what I should been quoting then I will know for next time!!

No problem, Mike. I'm happy you are mentioning Giselle MacKenzie. My parents took me as a young boy to see her in summer stock at Canal Fulton, Ohio. I can't even recall the show. This may have been 1966.

I haven't heard Giselle MacKenzie's version of Hey There, but Rosemary Clooney's version definitely includes the opening verse, or preamble as you call it. Yes, that is what you should be quoting. For the other game, you can supply any lyric from a song, but they must be Matt Monro songs. The opening verse game can be any song.

Marian and others - I'm serious about my submitted opening lyric. Do you want a clue already? It was popular in 1945-1946 and has remained a standard even today. I'd bet that everyone on this board knows the song. Have fun guessing!

Doh!!

Now I what you know mean Paul - its la vie en rose! I have Donna Summer singing it and everyone else has had a go! Even Bette Middler and Grace Jones.

Now I've got the hang of this - how about

'Old man sunshine listen you, don't tell me that dreams some true, just try it - I'll start a riot!
Beatrice Fairfax dont you dare, tell me that he will care, I'm certain, this is the final curtain
I don't want hear from any cheerful Pollyannas, that tell us fate supplys a mate Its all bananas'

Its probably very easy, buts its the only preamble I know!
