June 16th.

Who knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts with a song that started it's life being played during a tv play, the song then took on a life of its own.

Karl, on August 15, 1964 Dean's song did takeover #1 from the Beatles.
But in May 1964, this song by my favorite old jazz artist took over #1 from the Beatles.......

"HELLO DOLLY" by Louis Armstrong (Is there a previous date you're thinking of, Karl?)
This is on the Billboard USA charts, not on the U.K. charts which were different.

If I'm right, now you can answer my question about my favorite alcoholic beverage....in a Manhattan, that is!

You're still wrong Henry, also I am talking about the British charts - you assumed August but it's actually April for the record I have in mind.

Karl, Was it "GLAD ALL OVER" by the Dave Clark 5 (on the British Charts in Jan.1964)??
The above displaced "I Want To Hold Your Hand"

Or it could be "Do You Love Me" by Brian Poole & the Tremeloes
who replaced "She Loves You" in Sept.1963 ??

Or the third possible artist & song could by Gerry & the Pacemakers.."I Like It"
which replaced "From Me to You" in June 1963 on the U.K. charts

Robert & Henry you are both wrong but you are NOT reading the question correctly. This song as I said started out in a tv play (series). To this day day people still ask the name of the series and infact it has recently been released on dvd.

Robert, Peter & Gordon were March I did say April,

I doubt any of the titles you've mentioned have been used in tv plays!

One final clue is I know the singer!!!!
