Tore Up - Roy Hamilton (Really enjoying this, it's good to hear him singing songs I know from other artists. I have Henry to thank for telling me about Roy)

Hi Marian,
I've always really liked Bernadette's singing, and acting, too. She's very appealing in both arts (hence all those Tony and Emmy awards!).
I only recently learned that she is Italian American, from humble beginnings in Queens, NY. Guess that's how she got that fabulous hair, Itaiian women often do.

Would've loved to have heard her sing with Matt.

P.S. I have this CD too. :)

Hi Marian! Carousel starring the wonderful Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones, Barbara Ruick and Cameron Mitchell? That cast?
LOVE IT! I also love the state of Maine, where it was filmed. Have spent many joyful summer vacations up there on that spectacular coast.

Sorry I typo'd in my last message and incorrectly addressed Mariana as "Marian". Yeah, I know, that happens to you two a lot.

Wikipedia has this interest Sinatra connection with Carousel (I'm SO glad Gordon McRae ended up in the movie!):

"Frank Sinatra was originally cast to play Billy Bigelow. He even pre-recorded the songs he was to sing in the film. But when he arrived on the set, Sinatra discovered that he had to shoot the scenes two times: one for regular Cinemascope and the other for CinemaScope 55. Sinatra, who never liked to do two takes of a scene, walked away from the set and said: "You’re not getting two Sinatras for the price of one". Ironically, just after he left, the producers found a way to film the scene once on 55mm, then transfer it onto 35mm; thus, the film did not have to be shot twice. But on February 14, 1958, Shirley Jones guested on the Frank Sinatra Show and was able to perform "If I Loved You" with him. This performance gives a taste of what could have been if Sinatra had not quit the film, and can be seen on the DVD Sinatra – The Classic Duets. The songs that Sinatra recorded for the original soundtrack were never released to the general public due to contractual issues. "Soliloquy", the song that the character Billy Bigelow sings when he learns that his wife is expecting a child, was one of Sinatra's favorites. He recorded it in the 1940s for Columbia, tried it at Capitol in the 1950s, and recorded it again in the 1960s for Reprise."

Henry, Is that the Sinatra lp with a green cover? I believe my parents have that one? Any choice cuts you'd recommend?

Lindy, I am a big fan of Carousel, my favourite film-and in fact the soundtrack from the film was the first LP I ever bought with my first wages. But as listed earlier my favourite Carousel soundtrack has to be the National Theatre one from 1984. Which starred Michael Hayden, who also appeared in the Broadway production with Sally Murphy. I have a clip of this on dvd, from a tv show called 100 years of Oscar Hammerstein, where Michael and Sally perform the Bench scene, half of which is missed out of the film--but it is included in the National theatre version. I have loads of different versions of Carousel, including one in which Barbara Cook plays Julie Jordan. I also have a Japanese cast recording.

Going back to Frank Sinatra I have a dvd called "Sound of the Movies"--an American import, all about the Rodgers and Hammerstein movies, , and they relate the story of Frank Sinatra refusing the show becauise of the 2 recordings-I think it was to do with ToddAO---but they do actually show Frank Sintra's audition for Carousel, singing "If I loved you"--complete with sweatshirt, and scarf tied round his neck. I have to say that Gordon Nacrae made a more convincing Billy Bigelow, and I loved Shirley Jones, and the only reason it is not my favourite soundtrack is that there was such a lot of music missed out of the film.

By the way--I have just spotted an advert on tv. that they are doing a month long season of Carousel at the Barbican until 15th September--I would give anything to go--but just now, I have a very painful knee and find it hard to walk more than a few yards.

Hi Lindy,
Yes the film version you mention is my favourite and this record is the one of the first I ever bought. I like Gordon Macrae as Billy Bigelow but I found your little story of Frank Sinatra fascinating. I think I did know he was originally cast for the film but not the reason he turned it down. I loved all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals when I was growing up, and still do.

Eman, yes, Sinatra's "Come Dance With Me" LP had a green cover with Sinatra wearing a Fedora with an eye wink & "Come Hither' finger!
The songs inside are all swinging.....but I liked "Day In-Day Out", "Saturday Night", & "Just In Time" (Check Out Song Previews on Amazon.com)

SALOON SONGS (Vol.2) - JIMMY ROSELLI (Backed by a swinging dixie jazz band) reissued by Max Cat Records
It also included "When Your Old Wedding Ring Was New" (His #1 Hit)
Henry H Puccinelli

Henry! Yes, then I saw it in the boxes in the garage!! I'll go through it again this afternoon and take it out! I saw the cover and that's what I remember looking at was the green background. I listened to some of it on Amazon and it's pretty bumpin'! I may have to get the cd if the lp doesn't play well.
