EVERY note Julia Fordham sings.

(When-following his English teachers nomination- a few years back my son attended the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington and New York, he represented the African Nations as a delegate-elect in mock sessions in the United Nations Assembly Hall. I contacted Julia and she gave permission for her song " Happy Ever After " to be played as part of the proceedings.A more than gracious and sensitive gesture for which we both remain forever indebted)

Getting away from the Glam:

Stairsteps - Stairsteps 1970 - Buddah - Gone are the days of the siblings doo-wop bringings of the 60's and they usher in the 70's with a Sly Stone/Norman Whitfield Consciencious Psychedelic Soul.

This album features the monster hit "Ooo Child" which many have tried to cover and failed such as Laura Nyro, Mary Wells, Dino and Dusty Springfield. Regarding the Dusty version, IMHO that has to be the worst version of the song I've ever heard. Dusty lacks the conviction of the song and she just doesn't have the inner city soul that the song calls for. To me hearing her version is like Pat Boone singing his cover of Tutti Frutti. I think maybe if someone like Lulu sang it, it would have more conviction as Lulu has more "street credibility" and the soulful grit that the song needs. I believe this is one song that should not be covered by anyone except the original artist. Again my opinion. The Stairsteps do a Sly Stoneish version of the Beatles "Dear Prudence" which isn't bad.

Eamon you are having a real go at Dusty these days, first with I Only Want To Be With You and now Ooh Child.
You may like to know the latter was one of the unreleased tracks that lay in the vaults for 30 years and was unfinished, there were several tracks that were this way as Dusty never got around to completing them. Until Dusty's version the song was new to me but I then heard a version by Nina Simone and Dusty wins!

Yo Eman. Ya got that right. Stairsteps "Ooo Child" was one of the best recordings of that decade, and it still sings. Thanks for reminding me. Seems more relevant in 2012, sadly. A beautiful record.

Hurrah for Trini! :D

Trini Lopez is my man for the best vocal recording EVER of Charles Chaplin's beautiful "Smile". :) Other than hearing Charlie's lovely instrumental of it in the movie, "Modern Times", I can only stand Trini's wonderful recording of it. It's a real uplifter, as Charlie intended the song to be (many others have recorded a sad vocal version).

You're welcome Lindy. The Stairsteps were the originals as the song was written especially for them. In actuality it's a song about moving from the harder life of the "projects" to a better way of living. So who was perfect to sing it but them, being that their father was a Chicago policeman who quit the force to manage and sing with group. Anyway it's a classic that NO ONE can touch.

Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield - ATCO 1966 - This lp is sometimes known as "For What It's Worth".

Another excellent favorite from you, Eman. :D

Stephen Stills, for me, is one of the special virtuoso talents of American rock music, in composing, playing, and singing.
I love his licks and his singing, and he has written many beautiful songs.
He's still at it in 2012, too! :o

Here's one of my fave's featuring Stephen, with another of his several very fine bands:

Manassas, Atlantic, 1972

In less than 24 hours, I will (allegedly) have Matt Uncovered in my hands. :D
