It's not one of my very top MM songs, but I've heard poor covers by Frank Sinatra and Buddy Greco. The Buddy Greco one is especially terrible, and he's one of my favourite singers.

Maria - Matt Monro

I don't agree, Robert. Matt Monro sings it very well, but I think this can be covered by other singers. I've heard lovely versions by many others, including Johnny Mathis.

Paul-I was waiting to see if we could challenge someone, because I thought straightaway that Robert had it wrong with "Maria"---as lovely as Matt's version is, I would not call it the "Definitive "version, and at the moment I agree with you that Johnny Mathis singing "Maria" takes a lot of beating---incidentally he also covered "Evergreen".

Hi Paul-yes I agree that Ella Fitzgerald and the Supremes do great versions of this song--but I bet most people would associate it with Mel Torme--the version that I always listen to is a Live version.

Marian, I know you absolutely love the Johnny Mathis version of Maria ..............but I have to say that MARIA is my very favourite song by Matt Monro so in my opinion, Matts gloriously beautiful version is the winner every time ................and Jeff, I know (ever since your first post on this message board) that you have NEVER been a big fan of Matts version of the song ...................but I AM............ so Matts version of MARIA, is the ultimate version for me

Robert--you are perfectly entitled to have Matt as your favourite version of "Maria"---but what I was trying to say--if you asked anyone for the most definitive version of "Maria" , very few would name Matt's version--possibly because many would not have heard it--and possibly the same would go for the version by Johnny Mathis too. I do realise that.

Funny how that song, amongst all others continues to divide us !!!
