Hi again everyone, some may say that I am now going from the sublime to the ridiculous---maybe they would be right---nevertheless, I love this whacky group and their whacky songs. The title of the song I have chosen appears to have no relation to the song's contents, and the words of the song do not make an awful lot of sense--but I have to say it just fascinates me--here it is

"The Beautiful South"

"Pretenders to the Throne"

and while I am at it--another one, not quite as whacky, and again, I do not understand what the words are about--but I just love it.

"Prefab Sprout"

"King of Rock and Roll"

Hello Mariana44 and everyone. I too like Prefab Sprouts "King of Rock and Roll". Do you like the latest song from the Beautiful South Mariana44, I think it is rather catchy.
Another song I love, it is a pop song from 1969. The group were one hit wonder's, but the song is so catchy and melodic I really adore it.

"Something In The Air" - Thunderclap Newman.

Hello all. Lena and Harry I gave GMMY a try, and what a lot to read about. Guess what else I saw there, yes the names of Lena and Harry, as special member's of GMMY. Even a special radio programme in your honour.
I saw the photograph of yourselves standing in front of Al Martino's photograph's.
There was a special write up about you on the website also. In the photograph you looked a bit younger than you do now,  how long ago was it taken Lena and Harry, if you don't mind me asking.

I also listened to Elaine Paige on the -listen again- feature. Did you notice her mistake after playing "On Day's Like These". She said that the song was written by Hal David and Quincy Jones, not Don Black.

Marian and Robert and everyone -- Here's a recommendation for 2006: "Broke" by a new group called Captain. I heard the song on Radio 1 a few times recently and thought it was a cool song. It made it to the lower end of the top 40 a few weeks ago. I bought the CD single on import at Tower Records Washington. I've been driving around listening to it and thought it sounded like something familiar. It was Prefab Sprout!

I recommend picking up the CD single (it's only 1.99) or going to their website on myspace to hear it (but the CD sounds better). It's a cute song and the singing includes men and women. I love songs that include both male and female vocals; it adds so much variety. And it has a real English feel to it; I believe they sing with an English accent, whereas I believe some British groups use an American accent; I'm not sure this is true or not. The B side really sounds English.

I noticed that The Beautiful South has a new song out and it may be on the Radio 2 playlist. I haven't heard it yet.

I hope you're both enjoying "Fill My Little World" by The Feeling. It has a real 70s sound, like something the New Seekers or Pickettywitch would have recorded. I got the CD single and 7 inch on limited release when I was in Brighton last November---before anyone had heard of this group.

Hi everyone---wow, what a relief--I was wondering what comments I would get about "Beautiful South" and "Prefab Sprout", so I am happy to get some positivity.

Robert and Paul--the new "Beautiful South" track is called "Manchester" from their new album--all about all the places in Manchester where it always rains---sounds strange--but nevertheleess--there is something about it!!

Paul--do you mean that the group "Captain" sounds like "Prefab Sprout", or do you mean it is "Prefab Sprout" recording under a different name.

That will go onto my list for checking out.

Robert-have you heard "Prefab Sprout" singing "Andromeda Heights"--really different to "King of Rock and Roll" , but quite cute.

Hi Robert, we've been associated with GMMY for nearly Seven years now, and because you have put the question so delicately about the photograph on there, :) :) it was taken about Six years ago, so yes, in contrast to icons like Joan Collins and Cliff Richards for instance :x :x we can only agree with your assessment of our more recent mug shots..
But seriously thank you and Marian for your nice comments. GMMY is a great web-site, is linked up to this web-site, and the web host Frank E Dee is one of the most genuine and nicest guys we've ever known. He plays and promotes all our kind of music and even though primarily an American web-site he includes and has great respect for the UKs artists including lots of Matt's music and constantly posting news on the Tenors web forum the most recent one about the fan club meet.
We have lots of your choices of music to check out right now, have heard of "The Beautiful South," but the others mentioned sound good too. :)

Hello Paul and all. Paul you definitely sound like an Anglo-Phile to me, if ever I heard of one. You seem to know quite a bit about Britain and you really do know lot's about British music, don't you. Even going back to the 1970's by the sound of it. Maybe one or two British group's try to sing with an American accent, but most of the British group's to me do sound British.

Hi Mariana44, Lena and Harry and everyone. The Beautiful South song "Manchester" has been out for a few week's now, hasn't it. It didn't do terribly well in the singles chart, but I thought it was very catchy, a very similar type song to most of their other catchy sing-along type song's. The album from which the single came from "Superbi" reached the top ten in the album chart's, a couple of week's ago. According to the song lyric's of "Manchester" it seem's to rain a lot in Manchester, but what about the rest of the country. It hasn't really stopped raining all over the place for ages.
Mariana44 I cannot remember hearing "Andromeda Height's" before. Was it a single by Prefab Sprout or an album track. If it was a single I will probably have heard it on the radio at the time, but probably didn't know the name of the song.

Just a final word to Lena and Harry. You don't seem to be wearing as well as me, do you.    No only kidding, you both look absolutely blooming. When you think of all the face lift's etc.. Joan Collin's has had over the year's, you two look absolutely smashing. I really mean that. These are definitely for you, Lena and Harry. 8) 8) :D :D

Yes, Robert, I could be considered an Anglophile. I think Americans get bothered with me because I'm always talking about British artists and music. I think the quality of the songs and musicianship is at a higher level. And more effort seems to be given into creating new talent and bands.

Marian -- Captain is a new group; I don't know too much of them except that they appear to be in their 20s. Their sound reminded me of Prefab Sprout when I heard the song "Broke". (I think they would be pleased that we are discussing them on the Matt Monro website!)

Hi Robert--I do not know if "Andromeda Heights " was a single---I have heard it on the radio a few times so it may be--I have the CD of the same name. Try and get a listen to it if you can--I would love to know what "The Beautiful South" would say if they knew that they were being discussed on the Matt Monro Website--it does seem kind of bizarre, doesn't it??

Robert--good news on the way--a heat wave at the weekend

Down here in the [sunny !!!] South, I have had my heating on today, and took my dogs out , wearing my winter coat and shoes, scarf and gloves, it has been so cold!!!

I have made a note to check out "Captain".

Hello everyone. Another song I really like, sung by a very mellow and tuneful singer Pat Boone, is the lovely "April Love". What a wonderfully smooth, romantic, gentle ballad the song is. It is just pure magical.
Pat Boone was a big star in the late 50's early 60's, both as a singer and actor, but mainly as a singer. One of my favourite film musicals is State Fair from 1945. A remake of that film was made in 1962 starring Pat Boone, who played the part dick Haymes had played in the original film.
Pat Boone had many wonderful hit song's during that period, but i'm not too sure about "Speedy Gonzales"!!

Hello Mariana44. We discuss just about everything on this forum now don't we. The Beautiful South have been around for a long time now and have made some wonderful song's, which are alway's catchy.
So you've had your heating on today have you Mariana44, and you live in the warm south.!! It has been very cold "up north" Monday, Tuesday and today. We've had touches of ground frost on a night, which makes it harder for the temperature to rise during the daytime. The so called heatwave will probably only be down south, as it's always cooler the further north you go. See, we talk about everything here. :) :)

Hi Robert---"April Love" would have been a lovely song for Matt to sing--although Mstt did cover "Friendly Persuasion" which is one of my favourite songs, originally sung by Pat Boone.

t is a coincidence you mentioning the Pat Boone version of "State Fair"--I had the other one with dick Haymes---also Jeanne Crain and Dana Andrews!! but I searched high and low for the Pat Boone version---then just a couple of weeks ago , I saw in WHSmith new 2 disc editions of the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals---with "State Fair" it included the dick Haymes version, which could be viewed as a sing-along---plus on disc 2 the whole of the Pat boone version!! It also included Ann-Marget and Bobby Darin. I also could not resist "Carousel" and "Oklahoma", both with a singalong version, and lots of extras on the 2nd disc.

I am now waiting for "Flower Drum Song" to be released.
