Two Versions of Same Song - Your Favourite
Re: Two Versions of Same Song - Your Favourite
I would have trouble deciding on Somethin' Stupid too, because I love them both. But I think I'd choose the new version, just because it's Robbie.
Here's a favourite from 1971 where one version was huge in the UK and the other pretty big in the US.
Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep:
Middle of the Road
Mac & Katie Kissoon
I'd choose the Kissoons.

Again so many versions of...MOONLIGHT BECOMES YOU, and the very first version that I heard and always favoured was BING CROSBY'S but it's JERRY VALES version who just get's my vote.

Wow! This thread has really generated some ideas. Thanks to everyone for their contributions. I'm not sure all the choices include well-known versions, but they're interesting nonetheless.
Paul, I guess I agree with you about Gloria Gaynor's being the best version of Never Can Say Goodbye, though I love Johnny Mathis's version, which is quite a bit slower but works well - however, it's not well known, so I'm breaching my own rules! I also didn't realise there was another version of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and I'm surprised that anyone else could do an effective version of it as it's always struck me as being almost a novelty song where the famous version is the only conceivable one; and I've never heard of the Kissons.
Other famous versions of the same song that come to mind are:
Love Is All Around - The Troggs, and Wet Wet Wet
She's Not There - The Zombies, and Santana.
No particular preference for either version myself but these are the kinds of songs I guess I was thinking of when I thought up the thread.

"THAT'S THE WAY i'VE ALWAYS HEARD IT SHOULD BE"
Jack Jones with Susan George-----Carly Simon
I know this is Carly's song--but Jack and Susie have the best version-by a mile.

Re: Two Versions of Same Song - Your Favourite
Have you heard Johnny Mathis sing this song--I actually like Cliff Richard's.
"I'D REALLY LOVE TO SEE YOU TONIGHT"
England Dan & John Ford Coley------Barry Manilow.
I always liked the original--till Barry covered it--and I much prefer Barry's version.

Yes, Jon the Mac & Katie Kissoon version got to #20 on the US charts and only 41 on the British charts. The Kissoons had bigger hits later in the UK, but no more in the US.
Here's a song I don't like much by either band, but I'd probably choose the Beatles version, because the Earth, Wind and Fire recording did not work at all. I see that Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers got to #6 on the UK chart, but I've never heard it (except just now on youtube). It's actually pretty good.
