Wow - sitting here and going through these threads is fantastic. And movies are always a difficult one because I can never choose!

I'll try and split them into genres:

Comedy - Well apart from some of the modern classics (Meet the Parents and Meet the Fokkers to name 2) I would have to say 'Whats up Doc', a 70s take on those fantastic screwball comedies. Barbara Streissand and Ryan O Neal are fantastic, but even funnier is the actress Madeline Kahn who plays the whinging Eunice. Close runners up for my money are those fantastically glossy 'sex comedies' starring Doris Day & Rock Hudson - 'Pillow Talk' was particularly inventive

Musical - Hmmm - Of course the 'Sound of Music' has to be top here for its sheer energy, scale, and happy ending! My favourite song would have to be 'Doe, a deer', although '16 going on 17' is great. That moment where Maria and the Colonel are dancing is mesmerising.

'Meet me in St Louis' is a glorious movie, fantastic colour and superb songs. Yes, the Trolley Car Song, is a favourite of mine too, and is onn my i-pod!

I loved 'Oliver!' - Shani Lewis is an amazing Nancy, and delivers all of her songs beautifully. The sheer scale of the sets and routines are breathtaking, and the scene where Nancy is murdered always brings a lump to my throat.

Finally, and probably alone on this one - 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!' - The sets again win it for me - 'Toot Sweets' has to be one of the most perfectly staged dance numbers ever! All of the attention to detail in the machinery, the colour, the clothes, the movement, the music. the choreography - tremendous

Fantasy - my mum introduced me to 'A matter of life and death' many years ago, and I think it is a beautiful film. A great fusion of fantasy and real gripping drama, along with a real Utopian view of Heaven, all neatly tied up in a love story

Drama - a Night to Remember. The Titanic story told in documantary style - another gripping drama, with some fantastic acting. The story unfold in the time it took the ship to sink, and doesn't have any of the melodrama told in either 'Titanic' (1952) or 'Titanic' (1998). British stiff upper lip cinema at its best. The scene where Honor Blackman is put into the lifeboat with her children, and her wealthy husband has to say goodbye to his sleeping son moving.

Anyway - just my thoughts!
