DOROTHY SQUIRES

Post by karl » Fri Aug 19, 2011 10:12 am

Do we have any Dorothy Squires fans?

I saw Dorothy twice in concert and met her once in her dressing room, I also spoke to her on the phone a few times and she was always very pleasant to talk to - onstage she was absolutely amazing.

Hi Karl, My family and I had lunch with her in Gib in 1970 when she appeared on the rock that summer. All the 'British' comedians, singers etc etc were invited to the Officers Wardroom at HMS Rooke for cocktails at noon on a sunday. My father was entertainments officer for the Royal Navy at the time, and we had some great celebrities come over to the wardroom. Dorothy was married to " My name is Moore, Sir Roger Moore!

We like Dorothy Squires. She was not only a great singer and entertainer, but was the highest payed female singer in the Forties.
Her audiences adored her, but throughout her life she never recovered from the break up of her marriage to Roger Moore.
Billy Reid was a song composer and her former partner and we had contact with Billy's son a few years ago regarding the song that his Father wrote " I Still Believe," recorded by Dorothy and Al Martino and Ronnie Hilton. This song was played throughout the movie "Dance With A Stranger" about Ruth Ellis the last woman to be hanged in Britain. It was her favourite song at the time. :)

Lena & Harry did you ever see her at the Palladium? How I wish that concert had been recorded on film as well as for record, especially the 1971 show when she did that amazing and very long Irony Of War medley, that pint sized woman stood on the stage and sang her heart out for almost two hours - believe me she is small when I met her in her dressing room (which was packed by the way) she was standing right in front of me and I never saw her until I looked down!
Dorothy always had very talented acts on her show before she came on, infact that's when I first heard of Roy Walker, he has a great voice and does not sing enough, there was shades of Jack Jones in his voice (Marian)!

No Karl, we didn't ever see her in concert, but have a lot of her music including the Palladium LP, and some clips of her on DVD.
She was quite a character, and often in scrapes with the law, but to her friends and those who knew her, she was said to have a heart of gold. :)

I like Dorothy Squires very much, in fact the Live At The Palladium 1970/1 cd was the first disc I bought when it was first reiusses on cd, that would be around 1997, I think. I have collected several LP's and cd's since, I think she did around 5 "live" albums at least. I think most of them have since been released on cd, although I am not sure about the 1972 Palladium concert.

John there is a good Live album Dorothy did at the Regal in Llanelli, after one song a member of the audience called out to her and she put on her best Welsh accent and said "Now Don't Make Me Cry Man", however it's never been released on cd.

We have the LP live from the Regal Llanelli recorded on the 8th of October, 1966, the title is THIS IS MY LIFE. Some great songs at the end for her fans to enjoy. The Song Of The Valley, Well Keep A Welcome, and Back In Your Own Backyard. :)
