Just to follow on from the previous topic of "Favourite Childhood Book", I thought this may give some interesting results--may even introduce us to some new authors.

If I like an author, I will read all the books by that author---many times over---and I have been told I should broaden my horizons--so maybe I will.

You can tell us a little about your favourite author if you so wish--and chose a favourite book by that author--if you can !!

Also the same author can be nominated by different people.

My first favourite author is MONICA DICKENS---great grand-daughter of Charles Dickens--I am finding it almost impossible to choose a favouite--the first book I read of hers was "No more Meadows" , which was enough to get me hooked--just talking about them makes me want to read them over again- -- ALL of them. I have already read them so many times, they are literally falling apart, held together with elastic bands---and I have had to replace them all. Luckily still available on Amazon etc.

But I am going to chhose Monica's autobiography ""AN OPEN BOOK" as my favourite--telling of family life in London in the 1900's , but also how all the experiences in her life, inspired the fictional books that she wrote.

Thanks Pam--that is a brand new name already to me---are these some kind of detective story?

My favourite author has been and always will be Jane Austen. I have read her books so many times I can practically recite them word for word. I also have many of the TV productions (especially the BBC adaptations by Andrew Davies) and have put them on my iPod so that when I'm on holiday I can watch them all again!

I also enjoy historial novels by Jean Plaidy, Philippa Gregory and any authors who write about the Tudors or Stuarts as I find that the most fascinating period in history.

I also like Jeffrey Archer's books. I find him a really good storyteller.

A really good read is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and also A Thousand Splendind Suns by the same author. These are both very sad stories but well worth reading.

There are numerous authors whose books I have read over the years but of course far too many to mention here

The Aunt Diminity series is about a girl from the US who inherits a cottage in England. She solves crimes with the help of Aunt Diminity who is dead but communicates with her thru a journal. they are really wonderful

Maureen, thanks for all your suggestions--I am not into historical books as a rule, but I enjoyed your comments.

My favourite crime writer has always been AGATHA CHRISTIE---I have read and reread her books so many times--strangely enough, I do not always remember "who dun it" , but even if I do, I still enjoy reading them-and they are very easy reading.

I know that they have been made into films and tv, with various actors and actresses playing Poirot or Miss Marple--but not one of them compares to reading the book--I do not like the films at all.

As Maureen says the books that we have read over the years are many.
Like Marion I enjoy a good 'who dun it'.
Good crime novelists I have read are Stephen Booth,John Harvey and am just starting reading Jeffrey Deaver,recommended to me.
What about Martina Cole rather near the knuckle!

One of my favourite authors is not strictly an author-she is an actress. Her name is Molly Weir, and she died a few years back aged 94.

She had such an interesting and full life, that her autobigoraphy went into 7 books !! Each one I have read many times over--because if I read one, I have to read the whole series. She has such a readable quality to her books, and the stories of her life events are just fascinating.

I guess my 2 favourites of the series are the two that tell about "The Itma Years", which I can just barely remember--then on to the "Life with the Lyons " years, which I remember very clearly, and are always associated with the family Sunday Lunch.

The books are still available in Amazon, as I have recently had to replace them all, being worn out--they could also be on ebay. The first one is called "Shoes were for Sunday" and tells of her childhood years , living in a Glasgow tenement, before the war--with characters so real, it is like knowing them yourself.

I have not come acroos a single person who has also read these books--but i would love to, one day.

Was Bebe Daniels in "Life with the Lyons" ?

I'm pretty sure she was married to Ben Lyon and was in the series Robert.

Yes, you are both toitally correct. She came over on the show as quite a ditsy character, but in fact she was just the opposite.

Of course they are both gone now, along with Molly, and many of the other regular characters-but Richard and Barbara, the son and daughter are still around I believe.

I bought a cd of 4 "Life with the Lyons " programmes, just a few years back--and they were not quite as funny as I remembered them to be, so I was somewhat disappointed.

My favourite author is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - he who wrote the Sherlock Holmes long and short stories, and the Professor Challenger series.

Have I ever mentioned M. C. Beaton. I love the Hamish McBeth and the Agatha Raisin series

I do not think you have mentioned that name, Pam--and it is a name that I do not recognise.

she lives in the Cotswolds I think. Her books on Hamish McBeth are set in Locduh in scotland, he is the policeman. Agatha Raisin is a set of detective stories set in the Cotswolds. great fun books
