Lost or Forgotten Songs

Post by paul jh » Tue Oct 27, 2009 12:05 am

Reading Jon's comment on Jesamine by The Casuals made me think of this new game. I think we all get tired of the same tired old songs on the radio and especially on TV shows like Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor. The ones that I cannot tolerate are: At Last, I Will Survive, (I've Had) The Time of My Life, Dancing Queen, Beyond the Sea, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, Up Where We Belong, Stayin' Alive, and now thanks to Mr Bublé, Cry Me A River.

But this new game is for those older songs you love that you feel no one else knows or remembers. When you're listening to it, you feel like you're the only person in the world listening to the song. I love that feeling! So maybe I don't want to share any songs. But hopefully we can learn some new great "old" songs -- or rediscover old songs we have forgotten.

Just driving yesterday, I played this song and thought it would be perfect for a group song on American Idol or X Factor as it's a great upbeat song. But I'm pretty sure the programmes' music supervisors don't know it or they won't hire me anytime soon. :) So we can share our songs in the marvellous Matt Monro forum.

The song is:

Great idea for a thread, Paul. Why didn't I think of that? Hope you agree with me about Jesamine. I'm sure there will be other songs I can think of but the other one that comes immediately to mind is Elenore by The Turtles (another great 60s song).

Ok--here is my first one---it is a song that was written by Neil Sedaka, who is a prolific composer-he has written loads of good songs--a few not so good---but also quite a few great songs--this is one of my favourites--called

"FOR PEACE AND LOVE". I also have it sung by Vince Hill-but I have never heard either version anywhere else, except my record/cd player/ipod.

I had the opportunity to talk to Neil, and I told him this was my favourite song of his, and he said that it was also the favourite of his son.

From the Barbra Streisand CD called "A love like ours" recorded after she married James Brolin--which I was surprised to learn was 13 years ago--she sings a beautiful song that I have never heard before--and never heard it on the radio--called "Just one Lifetime".

I've recently bought a bumper CD of Sixties hits, some familiar, others less so, and have been enjoying Solomon King's song "She Wears My Ring". Apparently it was a hit in 1968 but I'd never heard it, or heard of it, before, and he sings it pretty well.

Hmm, OK, I wasn't all that old in 1968, so some of you clearly have better memories of it then me.

Elvis recorded the song too, but that tune always reminds me of another song... When you're in love, the whole world sings a melody, when you're in love, who cares if raindrops fall.

What is the name of the song Lena and Harry? The lyrics don't ring a bell.

I've never heard of Jon's song or the singer. I don't think it was a hit in the US.

Here's another lost song. I'm sure Robert will say it was a big hit. I think it's one of his favourites. But you never hear it anymore in the US.

There's a great guitarist who plays and sings at a local sandwich bar on Fridays. He sings lots of Beatles and songs from the 1970s and even the Ink Spots. I always ask for Make It With You by Bread and Ink Spots songs. The other day I requested I'd Love You To Want Me by Lobo. He said he hadn't heard it in years, but it was popular in Mexico where he grew up. He was concerned that no one would know it as all you hear on the US radio are songs like Hotel California. He learned it for me and played it at my next visit. It was a great version, very true to the original. The customers loved it!
