Famous Songs from Non-Famous Musicals

Post by jon » Tue Dec 19, 2006 2:50 pm

Bit of a gamble, this.

I can start with "All the Things You Are" from "Very Warm for May", and "The Lady is a Tramp" from "Babes in Arms". There are several well-known songs from "Babes in Arms ("My Funny Valentine", "Where or When") but the difficulty is maybe matching something famous with something truly obscure. I guess the definition of "obscure" might be a musical which the man in the street couldn't name if presented with the name of a connected song.

How about Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair, A Wonderful Guy, Bali Ha'i, Younger Than Springtime, There Is Nothing Like A Dame, This Nearly Was Mine, Honey Bun, and that wonderful UK #1 chart hit Happy Talk from the obscure musical South Pacific?

You said obscure Jon ... none of the 20- and 30-somethings I work with have ever heard of South Pacific. You know how Americans are (or perhaps you don't). Now maybe you'll understand why I only listen to the BBC and why I like to come to the UK so often.

Well, this might count----"My Romance" great song----from the musical "Jumbo ", which I would class as obscure .

Wasn't LITTLE GIRL BLUE from JUMBO? The Carpenters did a lovely version of this.

And I think in the original production of Jumbo - THERE'S A SMALL HOTEL, but it was dropped and appeared in a film later.

With all those songs, "Jumbo" does sound very obscure
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Robert--that is the whole point of this game---most people would know these songs, but how many would know that they came from the musical "Jumbo"??

Here is one---a well known song "The Gentleman is a Dope" from a very little known Rodgers and Hammerstein musical called "Allegro "

Another obscure musical from the Gershwins called "Oh Kay",
but it featured that beautiful song---indeed one of my favourites

"Someone to watch over me"

I knew this would be an awkward one.

Paul, I think I do know what some Americans are like and, yes, it doesn't surprise me that some of them haven't heard of "South Pacific", but obviously that wasn't what I was thinking of in the question ("South Pacific" easily being a famous musical in most people's book). Some of the songs mentioned here are not in fact all that famous themselves. I guess Mariana44 has got the right idea with "Someone to Watch Over Me" (famous song) from an obscure musical ("Oh Kay"), but this has clearly got you all thinking hard. To be honest, I can't actually think of any more examples myself. So go on, make my day...
