A Texan's View

Post by gkerbow » Tue Jun 29, 2010 5:21 am

I was a little late in the game in learning of and obtaining my Special Edition of "The Singer's Singer - The Life and Music of Matt Monro." Upon receiving it, I was in the middle of David McCullough's 682 page biography, "John Adams", so it took me a while to get to it. Once I did, however, I had dificulty putting it down. Coming from acoss the Atlanic, I was not introduced to Matt Monro through traditional means.

I first learned of Matt's music when I was 10 years old after my parents purchased the family's first stereo system , which included a set of five albums. Along with records from Floyd Cramer, Boots Randolph, Sarah Vaughn and a Kentucky Fried Chicken Christmas collection, an obscure album entitled, "These Years", from a chap named Matt Monro was the fifth album of the set and remained in the cellophane wrapper for about a year until finally my brother and I opened it either out of curiosity or boredom in order to listen to somehting different. My life was changed from that time on after listening to Matt's eleven tracks on this wonderful album.

Since the advent of the Intenet, I was able to learn about Matt and his life, which led me to the website and fan forum. In looking at the album cover and listening to his music, I often wondered what kind of person Matt Monro was. I imagined him to be a good fellow and I was extremely pleased to read that my hunch about him was confirmed after reading his story.

Michele, thank you for allowing us to enter the life of Matt Monro and his world and get to know him through your book. His story completes his music and I was touched to read of the hardships young Terrence Parsons overcame and evolved into the loving husband, father and entertainer I secretly hoped and optimistically believed he was. It was truly a remarkable read and I am richer for it.

That's a brilliant piece of writing right there!
