I've been listening to another great CD by Perry Como, thanks to John.
There are two tracks which I think would have been extra special given the Matt Monro treatment... "Someone Who Cares," and "My Days of Loving You."
:D :D

To go back to some issues raised here recently:

Robert M and Broadway M: I have never heard of Broadway Melody of 1940 (or some year in that decade). I'm assuming it's a film. Do you recommend it? Is it a musical? Why is it mentioned so often on Sunday evening Radio 2?

Anne Shelton: I listened to Russell Davies twice this past week to hear One Morning In May and to hear Anne Shelton's Body and Soul. Mr Davies is right in saying that her singing approach is very dated, but I love it.

On Days Like These on Simon Mayo on Monday: thanks Gray for the tip. I can't recall in what thread you mentioned it. That sounded like a young man who requested Matt Monro. How cool was that? :D 8)

John and the Rare Monro: :?: Disc 1 or 2? Yesterday I listened to disc 1. Impossible to tire of this fine selection. I really must listen to disc 2 over the weekend to hear Blue Moon and other great recordings.

Alan Titchmarsh: I'm listening to this week's show. Thus far I'm treated to Eric Coates, Alison Balsom, the South Bank TV Show theme, and Sounds Orchestral's Cast Your Fate To The Wind .... and that's just the first half hour!

So Russell said that Anne Sheltons singing approach is dated. Fair comment I suppose if she was recording today.
It wasn't recognised as so by the British public in 1940 when she recorded this song "Body And Soul" and when she was regarded as the most popular British female vocalist to be heard over the air.
Both she and Vera Lynn were requested around that time more than any other British vocalists, although entirely different voices, and from America it was Bing Crosby and Doris day.

I prefer the singing of all four of those greats over many of the singers today. Another singer that I loved from that period was Bea Wain. I believe I've written about her before. Her style could be considered dated as well. She sang with the Larry Clinton Orchestra and had big hits with My Reverie, Heart And Soul, Martha, and I Get Along Without You Very Well. My Reverie is in my all-time top 40. I'm not sure whether she was popular in the UK. I need to dig out my CDs and listen to Bea Wain and Larry Clinton tomorrow. :) 8)

Jeff, the voice of Frances Langford could also be called dated too.............. but I just love her 8)

Also Jeff, there was a series of Broadway Melody films, 29, 36, 38 and 40. The most famous a them being BM of 1940 because of the famous tap duet between Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell 8) 8) to the tune of Beguine the Beguine by the Artie Shaw orchestra....................a song I know you are not particularly fond of :?: ............... ....................
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(
