Marian - you mentioned 'Poor Jenny' from an old show - and I know who sang it! I think it was Gertrude Lawrence. Its about a girl who nevers know what she wants out of life - ends up deciding at the age of 75 that she wanted to live to be the oldest woman alive - and then 'kicks the bucket' (to quote the song!) at 76. Julie Andrews sang a song by that name in her first flop 'Star!' which was based on Gertrudes life. I remember liking that song in the film, but couldn't name any others from it (but I am sure you'll all remind me!)

Mike--you may well be right about "Poor Jenny"--it would be from that era definately. Unfortunately I did not catch the beginning when the speaker was telling us about it, as they started singing straightaway, before our Minutes etc, and I was still collecting in the subscriptions
But we all managed to sing along with the chorus !!!

Marian, Mike could certainly be right about the song with Gertrude Lawrence and " Poor Jenny" and we also remember the circle games that we played as children those far off days when it was safe to play in the streets, for instance "Ring-a-ring-of roses," "The Farmers In His Dell" "Oranges and Lemons" The Big Ship Sails On The Alley Alley OH were favourites, and then there was "POOR JENNY". Your WI friends would definitely remember this.
A circle was formed with a girl who is elected to be Jenny sits in the centre with eyes covered and the voices would sing out with these words,
Poor Jenny Is A Weeping-a-weeping-a weeping
Poor Jenny Is A Weeping on a bright summers day.
Then continues a question...
Oh Why Are You Weeping-a-weeping-a-weeping
Oh why are you weeping on a bright summers day.
Then came the reply from Jenny.
Because you stole my lover , my lover my lover .
Because you stole my lover on a bright summers day It continues with more verses until Jenny finally chooses a lover from the circle to replace her.
Ahhhhh......Those were the days

Hi Lena & Harry (which one of you does most of the typing by the way?!) - yes that is indeed the same song - chronicles Jennys dreams at various ages and then brings you down to earth with here actual experience. eg 'jenny made her mind up when she was three, that she herself was going to trim the Christmas Tree. Christmas Eve she lit the candles, threw the taper away. Jenny was an orphan on Christmas Day'
