Finally, I'm able to listen to "A Man and a Woman" on "The Best of the Capitol Years". Have had visitors all weekend so no chance until now.
Of course I know the song now. I wouldn't descibe it as doleful, but it is rather repetitive and I find it quite boring. Definately not one of my favourites.

I don't know about the UK, but Breakout by Swing Out Sister was overplayed on the adult contemporary mix stations in the US. I really can't listen to it anymore. But I still love Am I The Same Girl by Swing Out Sister, however, Dusty Springfield's original version is better.

I saw a clip of Editors (it's not "the" Editors) on Jools Holland and was impressed. I'll have to check out The Rakes. Are you sure it's not Rakes, Jon?

I only have the CD single of Sophia. I also like Confide In Me. Radio 2 has returned to playing the album version of Sophia, which as you say is a bit different. I like them both.

Please give us a full report on the Manic Street Preachers concert, Jon. They were the band that Jo Whiley wanted her children to hear at Glastonbury. Shame Radio 1 won't play their new material. I still haven't heard Autumnsong.

I'm in Iowa for work. I brought along The Rare Monro to play in the car as I have a lot of driving through farmlands and small towns. Today I played disc 2 all day. I drove to a charming old civil war town, Galena, Illinois, for shopping yesterday and drove back tonight for a Broadway concert in their music festival. Singers performed songs from Broadway shows, many I've never heard. I really liked one from a new show Daisy Chaperone (it's called something like that ... it just opened in the West End with Elaine Paige, I believe). Then I drove up and down the streets with old shops, restaurants, and an 150 year old hotel (where Abe Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant stayed). I blasted Matt Monro's Blue Moon, Strike Up The Band and Row, Row, Row out my car windows. Some young girls were even dancing down the street! And just as I was to cross the Mississippi River, Up A Lazy River came on! :) :D

Hi Paul, that new show with Elaine Paige is called "The Drowsy Chaperone", but I have not heard any of the music from it yet.

Your trip to Iowa sounds interesting---and crazy

Jeff, you're not one of those yobs that blast music from their cars are you, annoying everyone ??    but as you were blasting out Matt, we'll forgive you.

The Manics played live on TV last Friday, on the Saving Planet Earth fund rasing show. I hadn't heard the song before, but they played "Autumn Song" and it was BRILLIANT 8) 8) :D :D pure 100% Manics.

Playing the Rare Monro tonight....................................Disc 1 8) 8)

Sounds like a great trip Jeff - did you also sing along to the 'Wonder of Woolworths' at the end of disc 2?! 'Strike up the Band' is a big favourite of mine, even though the lyrics are slightly different to the original chorus. Judy Garland sang 'Hes the man who makes the band grand', whereas Matt just sang 'hes the man who makes the band'. I've got used to Matss version now, and his enthusiasm and excitement to be singing this showstopping song is obvious!

Ken Dodd at the moment with a lovely album he recorded in the 80's called "Now and Forever". He does a great version of "Perhaps Love" on this one, plus "The Twelfth of Never".

Is that the same "Perhaps Love" that Placido Domingo and John Denver sang as a duet--I loved that song.

Mike, Matt does sound excited to be singing "Strike Up the Band" - the reason being that Nelson Riddle wrote the arrangement especially for Matt, so no wonder Matt sounds overjoyed 8)

Started listening to The Manics "Holy Bible" but it is a bit too heavy for me, so I have now put on "Everything Must Go" - much better, as all the songs are superb 8)

Robert - Yes, I'm one of those yobs, blasting music --- especially the new British bands in the car park where I work! I like to blast music that no one else knows! :) And I often play Matt Monro loudly driving down the streets when there are people around. 8)

:D Funny you ask that, Mike -- Shortly after I crossed the Mississippi River listening to Up A Lazy River, I was driving down a street that every American city has, with every chain retail and restaurant establishment. The Wonder of Woolworth's came on ... perfect timing! It was the first time I had played it. It's great and really long. I believe it was shorter on The Singer's Singer, but Robert can correct me on that. :?: Was that song really played on the TV and radio adverts in the UK? Was the full song played?

I just listened to The Enemy's latest release, Had Enough, on Jo Whiley's programme. It has a great sound.

Jeff, don't you park your car in the "parking lot" :?:

I can't remember if the longer version is on The Singer's Singer :?: but yes, I do believe the full version was played (mainly on TV) but not on the commercial free BBC, but only on ITV. It is not actually a song, just a long commercial

I think it's "The Rakes", Paul, but not sure. They're a kind of post-punk group. Not mad on them as such but they're quite fun. I'm abit confused - first you mentioned "The Editors" and then you mentioned "The Enemy" - two different groups?

Robert, I note you think Manics' "Holy Bible" is "heavy". It's the sort of album you really have to be in the mood for. I particularly like "Faster", the single from the same, but there are some other great tracks on there.

Paul, I know you like Razorlight. Can't make up my mind about them. I believe they've become a group people love to hate, and they are not considered "cool" (still, when did that ever worry Matt Monro fans?). I like "Golden Touch" and "Who Needs Love?" but do not like "In The Morning" and "America", even with repeated listenings. Maybe I need to keep trying.
