Northern Soul

Post by jon » Wed Jul 04, 2012 2:06 pm

I've recently been listening to some "Northern" Soul music - basically soul music derived from Motown, R n B etc, especially from the 60s: tracks like Ray Pollard's "The Drifter", Dean Parrish's "I'm On My Way", Dobie Gray's "Out On The Floor", and others. Does anybody like this genre of music?

Yes I love it and recently bought Northern Soul Vol: 2 on Universal's budget Spectrum label, I also have many other Soul compilation albums and I love the Motown sound anyway.

Do you know, Paul O Grady always has a "Northern Soul" spot on his Sunday programme--i always assumed it was music from Liverpool, or Manchester--or anywhere else up there. !! Well, well, well !!

You Baby by Jackie Trent & Dusty's What's It Gonna Be are great Northen Soul favourites Marian.

There's a great little shop in Manchester specialises in Northern Soul and an even better one in Nottingham.

Well, Northern Soul did originate in Manchester at a club called The Twisted Wheel, and then spread to others such as the Blackpool Mecca and the Wigan Casino. There are many different kinds of Northern Soul but I guess I am personally more interested in the 1960s stuff - what are often referred to as the "stompers" - rather than the 1970s kind. I didn't know Paul O'Grady had a slot on it so I will try and remember to tune in to his show more often. I was actually reading recently that Anna Ford, the ex-newsreader, is (or at least was) a big Northern Soul fan, among others.

Some of the northern Soul cd's have The Twisted Wheel on the titles & Out On The Floor.

I enjoy Paul O'Grady's radio show on a Sunday when I have the time to listen - I love his humour .

I don't "get" Northern Soul as the recordings didn't make an impact over here.

But I like new recordings that have a "northern soul" sound, like Feel the Love by Rudimental featuring John Newman.

Paul the biggest half of Northern Soul music comes from America, Motown, Atlantic, Stax etc;
however some of the British soul favourites are by Dusty or Jackie Trent - Jackie's song You Baby" being a favourite & Dusty's "What's It Gonna Be" .
