THE STORY BEHIND THE WORDS OF 'SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU'

Post by Catherine M » Fri Jul 27, 2007 5:59 pm

For those who dont know:

The Lyrics to this song were apparently written by a man dying of cancer
as his wife slept next to his hospital bed. Not wanting to wake her
before he died, he wrote his thoughts on a notepad.....'just before you
miss me....'
. How touching is that ?

All this I have on the highest authority from the King himself - Elvis- as seen on You Tube in his version of the song.

Still Matt's version is the best.

I'd never realised that - I always thought it was about the sad end of a love affair or something. It makes it even more moving now!

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......

The words and meaning of this song was discussed on this forum some time ago. I always thought of it as CM's version, because I have the 45" of the Elvis version, but I think there were a few other interpretations of the lyrics.
