Seeing Matt for the first time in 1968

Post by maureen & harry » Fri Jun 27, 2008 4:02 pm

We are writing to tell you about the first time we saw Matt back in 1968.

We were fans of Matt for a few years before this and once we had purchased "Hits of Yesterday" (still a great LP) we were hooked.

In a radio interview Matt refers to being on stage for about 2 hours at a Cabaret Club in the Manchester Area and this was the night we first saw him. It was a Club called the Poco a Poco and it was quite a large Club.

The Club was almost full that night as many of the Manchester United Team were in the audience, as a week or two earlier they had won the European Cup for the first time and were having a celebration evening.

The evening got to the point when Matt arrived on stage and what a performance he gave. He was taking requests from the audience and singing them which was something he never repeated again.

To hear Matt live was incredible as you tend to think recordings in the studio have been improved by the equipment they have but not with Matt, what you heard on a recording was what you got live - a fantastic voice, as any of you who were fortunate enough to see Matt live will agree.

The evening went on and on with Matt singing and eventually the bar was closed. As the tables were cleared there was not a glass in sight and Matt still carried on singing. The waiters were not serving but were listening to Matt and when he eventually didi finish his performance, the audience showed their appreciation over and over again. It was a night we will never forget and from then on we saw Matt countless times at many other venues.

Hope you have all enjoyed Matt Sings Nelson Riddle (EMI Gold) and "Yesterday" (Manila Concert).

We hope to share our walk down memory lane with you over the coming weeks and to give some insight into the man from a fan's point of view that Sinatra described as "the only British singer worth listening to".

Until next time we send you our very best wishes,

Maureen & Harry :) :) :)

Great story Maureen and Harry, and thanks for sharing it with those of us who were unfortunate enough never to have seen saw Matt live in concert.
He obviously appreciated his audiences who knew that they were watching a unique talent and as far as Mr Sinatra's comment, he was honest, and would not say anything unless he meant it.
We certainly have enjoyed the "Matt Sings Nelson Riddle "and "Yesterday" so keep filling us in with those great stories, and many thanks again

I really enjoyed you "memory" of seeing Matt in concert--I am one of many, who were never fortunate to be able to see him live, so it is extra special to read about anyone who did.

Hi Maureen & Harry
Welcome back. You were indeed fortunate to have caught
Matt's cabaret act. My wife and I saw him in a theatre setting
and enjoyed his performances, however I get the feeling that
the informal cabaret environment suited Matt best, enabling him
to interact to a greater extent with his audience thereby letting
his personality really shine through. Thanks for letting us share
your precious memories.

Hello again

Post by maureen & harry » Fri Jul 11, 2008 2:52 pm

Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for reading our first article, we were pleased that you enjoyed it and reading your comments boosted our confidence to write again soon.

We are very busy decorating at the moment and are going on a short holiday soon but as soon as time permits we will be writing our next article which we hope you will find interesting.

We have just received our Fan Members Magazine and there were some great stories from devoted fans who, like us, were fortunate enough to see Matt live at various venues.

We may not be the most prolific of correspondents but we do enjoy reading the forum and would urge anyone who has not yet joined to do so. There is a great wealth of information from the forum members regarding Matt and we are sure somebody will have the answer to any questions asked.

Thanks again until we write again,

Maureen & Harry
