Re: Local Music Legends
Just nominated Matt
..............this is what I wrote ............"I would like to nominate the late great British crooner Matt Monro, who was one of the worlds greatest singers. Frank Sinatra Bing Crosby Sammy Davis Jnr Johnny Mathis to name just a few where huge fans of the very talented Matt. Matt deserves some kind of recognition after all these years after his passing in 1985. He sang iconic movie songs From Russia With Love and Born Free which won the best movie song Oscar. His voice was majestic, a magnificent voice no other singer could match"...........but I'm not sure where the plaque would go as Matt's place of birth will have gone by now.

I have nominated him too.
Re: Local Music Legends
The plaque does not need to be at Matt's place of birth. Dusty's blue plaque is in Aubrey Walk where she once lived.
Re: Local Music Legends
Richard is it possible that you can get in touch with Michele for where the plaque should go?

We have just nominated Matt too.
We think Sandra's suggestion that Michele might have a special place in mind is a very good idea.

Re: Local Music Legends
I'm not sure Michele is going to be contactable before the nomination ends, but i will try.
I have suggested several places myself. Lever's Buildings in Shoreditch - Matt's first childhood home, Hornsey Town Hall - where he made his first semi pro appearances after returning from Hong-Kong and Dallas Road where Matt lived from the 60's to his passing. The place i haven't suggested is the Bus Garage as he only worked there for 12 weeks!
I did suggest on my nomination that they contact Michele.

I know that is true Karl, but usually the plaques are placed where that person was bornkarl wrote:The plaque does not need to be at Matt's place of birth. Dusty's blue plaque is in Aubrey Walk where she once lived.

Re: Local Music Legends
All done and nominated, and seeing that Matt has been recognised as Britains finest ever singer we'll keep our fingers crossed for a Blue Plaque.

Re: Local Music Legends
Hi everyone,
English Heritage used to have a rule that nominations for a blue plaque should not happen before ten years had passed. With Michele's support I applied for one for Matt in 2010. This was turned down because a previous application had been noted in 2003. I don't know if those applications will affect the BBC's search, maybe they can overrule this earlier rule. I hope so!

Re: Local Music Legends
This is a BBC sponsored Blue Plaque and British Plaque Trust, not English Heritage.
Re: Local Music Legends
Did you have any luck with a blue plaque for Matt Richard?
Re: Local Music Legends
We heard nothing i'm afraid
Re: Local Music Legends
Matt should have been first on the list ...........Britain's best ever crooner (or the world's best ever crooner without a doubt).........who sold over 100 million records .............it's absurd Matt was ignored.............I wonder who were on the judging panel............
..................also he did sing the Oscar winning song from 1966 Born Free ........I rest my case .................

What a shame!
I totally agree with Robert, Matt should have been first on the list.
