Robert M.
This is a direct quote from your previous post. "as I mistakenly believed the forum regulars were to be given priority"

I realize that American English and the Queen's English differ somewhat but "believed" and "thought" have two completely different meanings. Because you "think" something may be true does not necessarily mean you "believe" it.

I know people can have different opinions but must you make insulting remarks in order to try to make your point? Differences of opinion can be discussed without insulting one another. And who are you to call someone else's opinion rubbish? Isn't is possible for you to just say you disagree with his opinion and then add your reasons as you did? You would still be making your point without the insult. You might consider reading your next post objectively before you submit it and try to see how others may interpret its meaning. Just a thought.

In my opinion, part of your last post sounded disrespectful to Michele. She certainly doesn't deserve that.

I hope I have not insulted you in any way with my remarks for that was certainly not my intent.

Bitter Reply

Post by Michele Monro » Wed Mar 25, 2009 11:29 pm

Robert - you are quite entitled to your opinion and we certainly welcome everyone's view point but unfortunately your tone has coming off as quite hostile and has left a bitter taste.

While I certainly do not have to justify anything to you on my own website I printed the email because while you may have forgotten your earlier comments others hadn't and were offended by them. A lot of people have shied away, not wanting to leave an opinion and adding fuel to the fire but have written to me instead.

Your last posting informs me that if it wasn't for "the input of the present dozen or so very loyal wonderful members the forum would not exist' thank you for pointing that out. You go on to say that "these stalwart forum users deserved a little bit of loyalty, and to be honest I still do." What did you want me to do Robert - only opened the auction for those 12 people.

What gives you more right to bid than a life-long fan - just because you spend a lot of time posting you feel that earns you something - it did - it earnt my respect. You seem to feel you are doing me a great favour by granting me your presence here. What loyalty did you think you deserved?

The email sender felt they didn't have anything to contribute perfering to visit and just read the posts - I don't feel you have right to say that is rubbish. That IS the point Robert, a lot of people don't have a lot of self-worth or are incredibly shy, or are not competent with a computer and for their own reasons don't feel what they have to say would be interesting.
I know of several people who reply on the website heavily and would be lost without it.

Whatever you feel about it anyone who was new and made the effort to bid will most certainly not come back to chat - the experience has made them feel as if they were being attacked.

I run this website and to apply to the forum you have to submit an application and that is then placed in a pending file. The person who has applied then gets an email asking for their private details and once I am convinced that the person is legitimate and only then do they gain approval to use the forum. Every one of the people that have bid are bona-fide members - and no-one outside of this website roving the internet can know of the auctions existence.

I also sent a circular to every person in the membership file informing them of the book deal and the auction - that and only that reason gave them an invitation to join in should they wish.

I have a wonderful amount of memorabilia and possessions of my fathers and a lot of it lives in a safe within various banks and has done so for 25 years. I thought it would be nice if the fans had a chance to have one or two of those items giving them a better home than a bank vault. You have made me regret that decision. I feel the whole thing has been sullied and tarnished now.

Michele, after reading your previous post last night, I did feel rather hostile, and I think you would too in the same positon. If one person send's another person a private email, then that is what it is, private and should be kept private. If that person had grievances he/she could have posted their opinions on here instead. I still say I do not mind any true fan of Matt Monro bidding on these items. Michele, I did not say the fourm would not exist, just maybe in a different quieter way. I am taking the flak, as I posted the comment, but I know others on here totally agree with me.

So thanks to everyone for their support on this matter and for your private messages of support :D :D it could be rather quiet on here for a while, after tonight :(

I daresay Michele received permission to post that email...it's an entirely different situation than if she posted something that would have compromised or embarrassed the writer. It wasn't mine, but it pretty well summed up my earlier post.

I think it's pretty tacky to try to imply that you have more private support than she has, two whole smiley-faces' worth. It just sets up suspicion among the forum members, and for that reason I think it's a greater misuse of others' private correspondence than you think her posting of the email was.

There have been efforts made not to escalate this situation, and I do wish we could all look at the clear effect this squabble has had on Michele personally. I for one apologize for suggesting that any forum member was trying to get a deal by restricting access to the auction. I'm sure if she could do it over, Michele would have tried to find a different location on the site to host the auction, one that was not viewed as territorially. But the fact is that the forum was the only place to have it properly, and still is...

The major sticking point here is the degree to which one's dedication to Matt Monro, his music, and his legacy, as well as the rights and privileges granted therein, is proportionate solely to the number of times one has posted to a message board. I maintain that is a false measure, but I accept it if others disagree. Maybe we can debate that topic on a different thread, but for now I wish we could move on before this forum becomes irretrievably marginalized.

Please guys, time to call a truce.
There is no benefit to be gained by continuing to rake over old coals.
This is not good for any of us.

We agree, we are just sorry to all concerned that the auctioning has caused feeling that could have quite easily have been avoided, had we on the forum realised that we are just a small minority of the members,.. less than a tenth of the web-site and of no more importance than any other member. I suppose you could say that those of us, and some who post here daily have been wrapped in a cocoon, become a family unit without realising, surprised, and totally unaware that there are other members out there somewhere.
Robert has been a friend and part of that family unit that we share, and we thought no differenly to what he did.
So yes, lets call a truce.

I totally agree. Michele did not deserve any of this aggravation.

She has been incredibly generous in allowing these items to be auctioned on this Forum. We must get things in perspective---we are not bidding against the whole world, as on ebay, but just over 300 members of this forum. Perhaps we should remind ourselves how priviliged we have been to have this unique chance.

I think we should now draw a line under this topic.

We too feel that we must all move on from what has happened lately on the forum.

Last night Michele had to briefly close the site down and we kept trying to access it as instructed but for a while nothing happened. We really felt lost at not being able to view the forum but when it was turned back on shortly afterwards, it was such a relief. It made us realise that no one is bigger than the forum and that each and everyone of us has exactly the same rights and as we said before in a previous post that whether you visit daily or once in a blue moon is entirely up to you.

After reading all the posts regarding the auction, it has become very clear to us that Michele thought of all the fans and not just the ones on the internet. This was the fairest way this could have been done and we hope that when people reflect on what's happened they too will understand that this was the best way it could have been done.

We are not the most prolific of correspondents but we feel that we are true dedicated fans of Matt and his music. So let's put all this behind us and we would ask everyone to please not turn your back on the forum and also don't lose sight of all the hard work and energy that Michele puts in for the benefit of all Matt's fans.

We look forward to seeing you all here again soon.

Dear Michele

I find it very sad after going into this subject, that people seem to be unhappy about the auction, I cannot have enough praise for the people I have become friends with on the forum also if it wasn't for your and their kindness over the last few weeks, I do not know how I would have coped
