Hi Everyone,

There was a very good discussion on the radio last night.
Listeners were asked what was the first single they bought and why!

For me, it was "2 become 1" by the Spice Girls!
Sorry about that but the year was 1996 and I was only 10 years old and like a lot of girls I was into this girl power thing and didn't know any better at the time!

I don't have any Spice girls CD's now as I have seen the light and I do appreciate all the great artists that my parents and grandparents admired so much.

So, what would be your first record/CD you bought and like me, do you cringe when you look back and think what you once listened too when you were a lost soul.

Hi Hilary-I cannot remember the first single I ever bought, but I well remember the first LP--which was "Carousel"--As it was the only record I had, I played it non-stop--and I love it still. I now have 7 different versions of it, including the original.

Hi Marian and Hilary,
One of my first and very favourite albums was "Carousel" too.
As to my first single, I believe it was "Give me your word" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, or it might have been "Be My Love" by Mario Lanza.
I had very varied musical tastes in those days!

Hello everyone. My first ever single was by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbender's in 1965, if I can recall properly I think the song was "The Game of Love".

We always had records to play at home on our wind-up gramaphone, but one of the first records that I could afford to splash out on from my hard earned £2. 10 shillings a week :cry Ahhhh all together now..... I remember was Frankie Laines "Jealousy" and Marian , Mario Lanza's "Be My Love" was a sensation around that time and so was Tennesee Ernie's "Give Me Your Word" "and Sixteen Tons " real classics

I'll have to look out my old 78s stashed away somewhere. I bought quite a few of Mario Lanza's records at the time - Loved his voice.
I also remember "River of No Return" - Was that Tennessee Ernie Ford too? I know it was in the film with Marilyn Monroe.
Then I got to be a teenager and Terry Dene took over my life. Anyone remember him? - The Golden Age, Stairway of Love, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation."......My friends liked Tommy Steele and Elvis.

Hi Marian, Yes "River Of No Return" was another of Tennesse Ernie Ford. and what about "Bright Lights and Blonde Haired Women" and Mario Lanza is another favourite of ours, have lots of his music and he still has a great following with societies all around the world.
We have all those songs that you mention Marian and wasn't Rock and Roller Terry Dene married to Edna Savage.??

Wow--this is a real nostalgia trip--Yes Robert, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders did "The Game of love", and I think on the back was "Um, Um, Um". Plus they did the original "Groovy kind of love" And I remember Terry Dene and Edna Savage--she sang too, but I cannot remember her songs, but I do rememberr "A White Sports Coat and a pink carnation. ".

How about Jess Conrad--he was so good looking, and believe it or not, I saw just recently that he has a greatest Hits CD out.

And of course Marty Wilde was very big---"Endless Sleep" is one that I recall.--not to mention Tommy Steele and "Singing the blues"

I really did not buy records for myself till I left work and started earning, But I played my older brother's records sometimes--one that I vividly remember was "The Waiter and the Porter and the Upstairs Maid"--I vaguely remember that Bing Crosby may have been one of the singers, but I could be wrong

The first single I bought was Surf City by Jan & Dean in 1963. My second was Wishin' And Hopin' by Dusty Springfield in 1964 (which was never released as a single in the U.K.). Wishin' And Hopin' went on to become my favourite song of the 1900s.
