Definitive Track Listing

Post by paul jh » Sat Dec 02, 2006 4:38 am

The newly added 73 page Definitive Track Listing is superb! What a wonderful resource! Thank you very much for preparing it. We all will use it regularly. I have printed copies for home, the office, the car, and my suitcase when travelling.

I scrolled up and down repeatedly to try to find an error or omission. (Sorry, this is what I do for a living.) I Have Dreamed is listed as being on The Very Best Of Matt Monro CD. This is the first Matt Monro CD I ever bought and I know the track listing well; the beautiful I Have Dreamed is not on there.

It's interesting to note that several of Matt Monro's best recordings (e.g., This Is All I Ask, These Years, This Is The Life, Till The End Of Time) have seldom been included on compilations, whereas the rather average Unchained Melody is on many compilations.

Thanks again! We have been waiting for this for a long time!

I'm having fun with this list. Here's another that seems incorrect. You're Sensational isn't on The Very Best of Matt Monro CD.

I'd love it if EMI added I Have Dreamed and You're Sensational to this best selling CD compilation, but they're not on it yet (according to the track listing on HMV's website).

More confusion with The Very Best Of Matt Monro CD:

The definitive track listing says What A Wonderful World and When You Wish Upon A Star are on The Very Best of Matt Monro. They aren't on my copy of the CD. Perhaps there are two different The Very Best Of Matt Monro CDs. Who Can I Turn To is listed twice for The Very Best Of Matt Monro CD.

Track Listing

Hi Paul,
Glad to see you are enjoying the track listing. Because of a few!!! technical problems with the internet trafic and bandwidths being used Murph and I have immense challenges yesterday.

The list is in fact not quite finished and you will notice that all current available CDs'Lps will have click through thumbnails very soon. This will allow the reader to see instantly what is still currently available.

So onto the list

"I Have Dreamed","You're Sensational","What a Wonderful World" and "When you Wish Upon a Star" all feature on
"The Very Best of Matt Monro - EMI Music, Australia
This was a 2 CD set released under the Rainbow label 1997/1998

In the "Discography" you will notice that there have been 3 CD's all entitled "The Very Best of" Record companies don't have the best of imaginations!!

The working title of "The Ultimate Matt Monro" was .... you guessed it and there was quite an argument over the issue but I won that battle and thankfully ever since we have come up with other names.

EMI are under the impression that records don't sell unless they feature all the hits and over the last four days there has been outright war when the recently put to bed 2 CD album "From Matt, with Love" has all been changed. EMI have decided to TV advertise the album and the money men who get involved when these decisions have been made have decided in their wisdom that I had to cut the album down to one disc, that others had to go on instead and that instead of focusing on a "Love" album it would end up as another "best of". Needless to say I went ballistic and really had to right my corner, especially to keep your track on, it has been a rather unpleasant week, but I won a few of the wars but lost the ultimate battle and if you go to "CD of the Month" you will now see the final listing for the album.

Although I have stood my ground of the brand new "Love Story" "Be My Lady" "More""The Music Played" etc, I lost the argument over "My Kind of Girl" "Music to Watch Girls By""Born Free". The only ones that I really wanted on there that have now gone are "Didn't We", "And Roses & Roses", "Ethel Baby", and "I'm a Fool to Want You" but hopefully another time.

I will tell you as a side line that their original idea was to re-release "The Ulltimate MM" but add another 3 tracks!!!!!! The fact that 180,000 people have already bought that album says it all, who was going to buy it again!! a very stressful time but hopefully it will all come out in the wash.

I still think the album is a worthy addition to any collection and a definate purchase for any new Monro fans. The proof will be in the sales, so watch this space.

I am particulary proud of the album art design which is not down to EMI, but created by Murph and myself. Hope you like it.

Thanks for that information Michele. Just had a look at the cover..............which I like 8) The original 2 disc CD would have been preferable, but it's very hard for you to fight the bigwigs at EMI. There are just 2 songs on the CD I haven't got "Love Story" and "Once in Every Long and Lonely While".

At least EMI gave permission for "Heart of The Man" and "The Rare Monro" to be released 8) I will look forward to watching it being advertised, especially if its advertised on TV (I was over the moon when The Ultimate CD was shown on TV) :D :D

Paul, for some reason EMI don't put "Capitol" recordings onto compilations, only their own EMI recordings  I do know EMI own all the Capitol recordings, but hardly any appear on compilations.

Track Listings

"Heart of the Man" wasn't EMI. I did that album with Night Owl Music. EMI would never have released it as they don't own all the tracks.

I was extremely lucky on "The Rare Monro", dad has done extremely well since "Ultimate" and after the success of the DVD's and the BBC Documentary, the record shops were asking for more material and it was an very low budget album for them. When you think of it in real terms they threw away the real chance we had to release tis as a brand new album at a chance that would have reflected it. The wouldn't spend any money on it in promotion, not even EMI's own Easy Newsletter had the information, it was forgotten. Only HMV/Virgin have it which is not where our listeners buy as a rule and it has only sold 10,000 - but then what is new.

I have been rather lucky in the last few years and chosen most of the projects and as such have chosen most of the tracks. I am mainly concentrating on trying to bring to the market lesser known recordings, ones that have not been on CD or something that has been delete for some time. I don't purposely leave off Capitol tracks, in fact "Rare Monro" has 14 tracks of theirs included. 20 of the others were EMI and the remaining ones were owned by "The Estate". I think that is pretty fair but unless we release an album "Matt sings Capitol" that would be the only time I would purposely look out their tracks.

I am always asking for suggestions in the Forum, it has it's own header, so get writing.

I knew it was Night Owl Music who released "Heart of the Man" must be a memory thing, owing to my age  Does the same thing happen to you L&H, but probably even worse, as you're both older than I am

Shame EMI didn't promote "The Rare Monro" as sales would have gone through the roof. After all the album is "PURE SOLID" very very rare Matt Monro 8)

Well we have printed the Definite Track list and can only say a big thank you to Michele and to Murph for the hours (unearthly hours at that )of hard work that they spent providing us with this list for reference which is phenomenal.
We understand the constant battles of what tracks can be used and how those songs which rightly must be regarded as Matt's best songs, Portrait, From Russia With Love, Walk Away, Born Free, and regardless of weather the title is "The Best Of," or "The Very Best Of" are generally expected to be included.
The finished art work on the Love CD is perfect with a favourite picture of Matt and a rose.
Still a nice selection of songs, in spite of just the one CD, but considering the Two superb CDs of recent , it's not the end of the world, and we were pleased that "More" was included :) and like Robert there are two songs that we haven't got in our collection "The Music Played "and (Historia) "Love Story" Ole/

Michele - Thank you for that explanation on the new "love song" compilation. I would have gone ballistic too! I was wondering all weekend why Born Free and Music To Watch Girls By were included on a love song collection ... they just didn't seem to fit. And I was wondering why it was necessary to include My Kind Of Girl on yet another compilation. I like those three songs, but find that I'm getting a little tired of Born Free and My Kind Of Girl and I don't want to ever get tired of any of your father's music.

Thanks for standing your ground. I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the record company wanting to reissue The Ultimate with three added tracks. They do that all the time with pop and rock music, but your father's music is much better than pop or rock music. I never re-purchase pop and rock CDs when three tracks are added.

Special thanks for making sure Till The End Of Time appears on this compilation. It's the perfect romantic song for a Valentine's Day week release. Since this will be advertised on TV, I'm hoping it will be top 10 on the album chart. So I'm excited that the great British public will get to hear this recording. It is a master class in singing.

The cover is beautiful. I can't wait to purchase it and hear Love Story again, which was so lovely when played at Fans Reunited.

Thanks for the explanation on The Very Best Of Matt Monro compilations. I didn't know about the Australian version.

I consider 10,000 to be good sales for The Rare Monro. Perhaps I need another trip to London to rearrange all the Matt Monro albums at HMV and Virgin and put The Rare Monro in the front, as I did last month! This time I'll put it in the high traffic areas and move someone else (e.g., Michael Buble) to the back.

Robert - I love those four albums; some of those songs are on compilations, but many are not. Quite a few of those songs are on The Singer's Singer. I listened to These Years/The Late Late Show yesterday while driving all over the Washington area. As I'm mentioned before, I love the song These Years. It has a similar sentiment to On Days Like These. And I love how he phrases certain lines, such as "how lovely to remember", "time to taste live", and "time to live our dreams". I feel it's one of his most underrated tracks. I must have played it 10 times yesterday and sung it many times when I got out of the car and walked down the street!

Hi Paul, I know its like a "massive" compilation album, but I wouldn't personally call the "Singers Singer" a compilation album (as its so special) I did obviously know there are some of the Capitol songs on there, but what I really meant is, are many of the Capitol songs on any "normal" compilation releases :?:

Capitol released an album a few years ago, about 12, I think, called THE BEST OF THE CAPITOL YEARS, this had a few tracks from the albums you mentioned, Robert.
