The Rainy Day

Post by Michele Monro » Sat Nov 01, 2008 4:37 pm

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

The lines aptly sum up this November's downbeat debut;
they reminded me of Matt's intuitively sensitive rendition
of Rain Sometimes, and that other great interpreter's version
of Here's That Rainy Day.
I must say that, thanks to our producer, it is refreshing to see
poetry taking centre stage occasionally in this particular
Matt Monro Show. It was once described as 'the right words
in the right order'. Wordsworth described it as 'emotion recalled
in tranquillity'. The following is something I wrote 'along those
lines':

POEM

To me the word has always meant
emotional reaction;
first one heartstrings are tugged,
then one launches into
the aerial liberty of literary action,
and afterwards wallows in the warmth
of soul-deep satisfaction.
