Re: Ode to Keith
Maxine, I never miss Match of the Day.
Here are some lines on another topical subject:
PARTING PROCEEDINGS
Penniless Scotland, following the failed
New Caledonian money-making scheme,
felt unable to resist the lure of Queen Anne's
English £400,000 dowry.
Thus in 1707 he acquiesced in the hailed
fulfilment of her kingdoms-in-union dream.
Having entered the enduring, yet at times
culturally dissonant marriage of convenience,
but now solvent on the proceeds
of North Sea oil's munificence,
Caledonia is suing for divorce,
on which the Scottish court of democratic opinion
will rule in due course.

Very good Keith.
I watched the debate on Scottish Independence on tv, both parties were annoying as they kept talking over one another. I wonder which way the vote will go.

Re: Ode to Keith
Yes, very good Keith, I watched the debate too Marian, and I think Alex Salmond just got the edge this time.
Well, we'll know in Three weeks time if Scotland choose to go Independent. I can barely sleep at night.

Re: Ode to Keith
Yes, I agree Lena, I also think Alex Salmond was rather more convincing. I didn't see the first discussion.

FAMILY FIDELITY
If I had a vote as a Scot
I would keenly vote yes
to break free from Westminster's hold;
but since I am very much not
I hope the Scots vote no
and stay within the UK fold.

Re: Ode to Keith
Just as our Matt's many memorable renditions on the subject not just close
to our heart but in it, remain unsurpassed, so in my experience the following
lines on the meaningful matter remain equally pre-eminent:
WHAT LOVE IS
Love is the centre and circumference;
The cause and aim of all things - 'tis the key
To joy and sorrow, and the recompense
For all the ills that have been or may be.
Love is as bitter as the dregs of sin,
As sweet as clover-honey in its cell;
Love is the password whereby souls get in
To heaven - the gate that leads, sometimes, to hell.
Love is the crown that glorifies; the curse
That brands and burdens; it is life and death;
It is the great law of the universe;
And nothing can exist without its breath.
Love is the impulse which directs the world,
And all things know it and obey its power.
Man, in the maelstrom of his passions whirled;
The bee that takes the pollen to the flower.
The earth, uplifting her bare, pulsing breast
To fervent kisses of the amorous sun -
Each but obeys creative Love's behest,
Which everywhere instinctively is done.
Love is the only thing that pays for birth,
Or makes death welcome. O dear God above
This beautiful but sad perplexing earth,
Pity the hearts that know - or know not - love!

HAIL HULL!
A former industrial heavyweight champion,
Hull is recovering from the double-blow torpor
of job-stealing automation, and the 70s cod war
that devastated his fishing industry.
Now the Port of Hull rises from the canvas
to reclaim his top contender status in the form
of Hull Green Port, a service hub for giant windfarms
and a wind turbine facility that will create and support
the UK's massive offshore wind programme.
Resurgent Hull FC are in Europe and the City of Culture
looms grandly on the horizon.
Hull City returns in planet-defending mode
to punch his weight once more courtesy
of his former benefactor -
the good old North Sea.

That was a lovely tribute to Kingston Upon Hull, Keith
But just two points to clarify ...........Hull City are now out of Europe and Hull FC are the Rubgy League club known as the Black and Whites or the Airlie Birds (their former ground the Boulevard was down Airlie Street)
