I only just discovered this "blip", as I just got round to putting the Rare cd on my ipod--disc 1 was fine, but when I got to disc 2--no track names or any info came up--so I had to enter all the details by hand--took me ages---when I tried to get the track mames, it just said that this cd is not in our Database--but cd1 was in the database--do you have any ideas on why this is Richard ?

The CD does not information about the tracks on the album (EMI do not use CD Text, although I do provide it) it is all from an online database

iTunes and many other disc ripping programmes use an online data base called 'CDDB' run by a company called Gracenote. There are others databases other programmes use too like 'freedb' and i think windows media player has it's own.

All of these databases rely on members of the public entering the information and uploading it to the server (On iTunes there is an option to do this, something like "submit disc information to CDDB)

Evidently someone has entered the information on the database for disc one, but not disc two.

This is not a blip with Rarer Monro, but a blip with the database!

Thanks for clearing that up Richard. I had the same thing happen last night when I was putting the new Bruno Mars cd "Unorthodox Jukebox" on my Ipod. Funny thing is they have that cd on their I-tunes. Oh well.

Thanks for the information Richard---perhaps the info will be there now that I have typed it all in--I judst thought it was some information on the actual cd--I guess that explains why there are are quite a few cds without this info.

I notice that on my car cd player some cd's give you the tracks and others don't. My home player does not do that and it's a Bose.

Yes Karl, That's called CD text (a lot of car radios have this facility but not many home systems) and this is included on some CD's. I provide this on the masters I send to EMI, but it appears that they don't want to included it as they always filter it out.

Eman, the problem with Itunes is that it doesn't use it's own database, so something can be on the store site but not on the CDDB database - this happens quite a lot!

That's good to know Richard. Maybe you can answer this question. I see a lot of stuff on I-tunes such as some old teenybopper records from my childhood on their store, but then they aren't commercially available as cds just downloads. That's pretty wild and never got that concept. I bought a download of an album I loved but when I heard it, you could hear it sounds like it was ripped from vinyl and they used some computer program to get most of the ticks and hiss out. Didn't think that was too cool, but cool enough to have that album again.

I rarely download from Itunes, I find it awkward to find anything-and even more awkward to download--however Amazon is so easy,, virtually just one click, and a few seconds later the trck is on my itunes playlist. Plus everything is so easy to find.

Eman, in the UK recordings more than 50 years old are out of copyright and therefore public domain. A lot of labels sell public domain material on itunes and these labels often don't sell physical product either or care for the quality of the recordings - they just want the dosh!

Some of these labels also sell material that isn't out of copyright, but this isn't policed very well and they often get away with it!
(Too many young people working for record companies that know nothing about music older than last week!)

Even though it is illegal to sell these recordings in the USA some companies have still managed to bamboozle itunes to sell them there and once again it is not policed properly.

Of course, the other point is that with these recordings the only people associated with the recordings that get royalties are the writers/publishers, the rest is pure profit for the companies concerned who just see pound (or dollar) signs. The artists gets nothing!

However some of the big labels also issue download only albums these days too, for titles that they believe are not commercial enough to warrant CD release (despite CD still out selling downloads at about 4:1 - yes reports of the CD's demise are greatly exaggerated!)

Wow Richard, that explains a lot. I never knew that.
