Matt Monro in Phantom?

Want to ask Richard Moore something - go for it! He is a veritable walking encyclopedia and is never happier than talking music.

Matt Monro in Phantom?

Post by Wahzy » Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:34 pm

Hi.

This is one of those questions that is a little silly but I like to see people's responses.

I am a big fan of Phantom Of The Opera. In particular the live show at Her Majesty's Theatre in London.

Now I know Richard previously stated he hates Andrew Lloyd Webber songs but, I think had he lived Matt would have been an excellent Phantom. Okay he wasn't very tall but his voice would have been perfect. I just wish he was around for it's launch in 1986. I know he didn't have an operatic voice but nor did the original Phantom, Michael Crawford.

This song in particular would have been great :)

Am I just being a bit deluded I don't know?!?

Anyone else think he would have been good on the musical/theatre circuit?

Alex.

Well you never know, Matt may just have been sensational.

Much as I like Petula Clark I was very surprised when she took the part of Maria in The Sound Of Music but then I saw the show and it was wonderful.

Whilst it's always possible Matt may have recorded something from Phantom I can't see that he would ever have appeared in a Musical. I wouldn't be surprised if he was even offered something earlier in his career. Michele will probably know the answer for sure and i'll ask her when she's back from her travels.

Have to agree with Richard in that I have never been a fan of ALW!
As for Matt in a musical, yes I can see where you are coming from with regards to Matts voice, and my choice for a stage musical would have been South Pacific or My Fair Lady?
On the silver screen any of the Sinatra musicals would have fitted perfectly.
For me it is all down to the actual song choices and I think that the majority of musicals are lame with lame songs!

Have to disagree with you there a lot of the new musicals are great, it would be interesting to hear what you have actually seen over the years.

Sometimes the songs sounds much better after you've seen the actual show and it all makes more sense than just hearing them on the album .

Hi Karl,
Whether you hear the songs live or on record they are still the same songs!
It doesn't matter a jot to me as to what setting they are performed in it is still the same tune and melody!
I usually listen to radio2 and they have a weekend show that is based on musicals and I haven't heard anything yet that has floated my boat enough to go and catch any new shows.
Apart from one show, I picked through my taste in songs and as a result the musicals I've seen over the years are Grease, Chicago and Cats(went with an ex and it was excruciating ! lol)
