Born Free..??

Want to ask Richard Moore something - go for it! He is a veritable walking encyclopedia and is never happier than talking music.

Born Free..??

Post by GregT » Tue Jan 25, 2011 6:27 am

Hi Richard,
Wondering if you can debunk a bit of mis-information that is circulating with regards to "Born Free".?
Whilst trawling the web for Monro tidbits recently I found a site which stated that "John Barry had nothing to do with it, it was Lionel Bart and Johny Spence".
"The Colection" CD credits John Barry and Don Black and also "Matt Sings Nelson Swings" corroborates this (I would have thought),beyond question ....and before you tell me..I've yet to fill my piggy bank full enough to be able to afford my copy of Michele's wonderful book, which would no doubt answer this and many more questions..
In the meantime I thought I'd ask the font of ..nearly all.. musical knowledge, your good self.
Not Only But Also....this site had an audio/film clip of "The Windmills of Your Mind" credited to a Mr "Matt Monroe"...whoever he is.
I was suspicious, and only listened to about three words before concluding that it was certainly NOT our Matt but an American gentleman named Jimmie Rodgers.
(How gullible do they think we are.?).
I have no doubt that these topics havel been covered before on the forum..but we tend to be a little behind the times here in the Antipodes
Regards
Greg

Of course it was Don Black and John Barry - The confusion often appears over From Russia With Love as that WAS written by Lionel Bart and arranged by Johnnie Spence. For some reason people often think that John Barry wrote and arranged the music for that (Because the did for the rest of the film) But this is the first time i've heard someone mix it up with Born Free!

The amount of rubbish out there is ridiculous. "Windmill Of Your Mind" was never recorded by Matt (Comes from the film The Thomas Crown Affair. The hit version is by Noel Harrison). You Tube is famous for having wrong song titles and songs attributed to the wrong person, problem is there isn't much that can be done about it!

The internet is a wonderful thing, but it can also be the bain of our lives!

Hope your piggy bank is being well fed! I wouldn't want to accuse you of not looking after it!

Richard
