Maria Mystery

Post by paul jh » Fri Mar 23, 2007 9:13 pm

I've been listening to The Late, Late Show and the Through The Years compilation often recently. And I've played Maria several times. (I'm just as shocked as you are, Robert.  But Michele playing the video at Fans Reunited changed my opinion of the recording. :) )

When I was listening to Maria on the excellent Through The Years compilation I noticed some guitars playing triplets in the instrumental interlude. The guitars are quite striking and add to the excitement of the recording. But I can't hear them on The Late Late Show CD. :?: Has anyone else noticed this? It's very thrilling to have two different versions! Matt Monro's vocals sound the same. Perhaps one of the recordings was remastered. I haven't had a chance to play Maria on The Singer's Singer. Perhaps it's different from the other two!

I've mentioned it previously, but I would love to have a CD of alternate recordings of the Matt Monro hits, i.e., different takes. I've heard that he recorded many of these songs in one take. But there must be some alternate takes available. I believe When Love Comes Along on The Rare Monro sounds a little different than the version on my hits compilation. It would be great to have an entire album of these alternate versions. This would be for the real fans, and EMI may not be interested in such a project.

I think there are a couple more tracks on The Rare Monro that are from a different take Paul. When Love Comes Along is one, like you say and another definite is I Love You Too. Sometimes there is only a slight difference, but you can tell. Love Song is also another that is just slightly different to the original u.s. single. Another example is One Day, the version on the Complete Heartbreakers is different to the version on This Is Matt Monro. I agree it is good to hear these different takes.

Another "Maria Mystery" to me Jeff, is why you didn't like Matts version from the start. Definitely one of Matts BEST ever recordings. Matt gives the song everything 8) 8) :D :D but I'm pleased you eventually discovered Matts "Maria" Jeff.

Your Birthday's gone now Robert. If we'd known before we could have bought you a wooden spoon.

Hi Paul

Look out for the LP/cassette called Hits of Yesterday. It contains the mono versions of the more familiar 'hit' stereo versions that appear on most of Matt's compilation CDs. (One Day and From Russia with Love are just two of the tracks on the album that are especially different from the stereo versions.)
