matts world of music

I have been reading this site since it started, but I havent posted anything as yet, but here goes. First of all did anyone see the 6 o'clock news on the BBC last Friday, they played Matt singing From Russia With Love during the Profumo report, did anyone notice as it hasnt been mentioned on the site as yet. In my opinion matt is the greatest. I especially like the ballads. While the site has been in progress I havent seen anyone mention their top 5 Matt songs, just odd favourite songs. Obviously there are many fantastic songs to choose from, but these are MY top 5 in no particular order of preference:

1 - Before You Go, which is a much underated song sung to perfection
2 - Maria, is the best version ever recorded, the ending of the song were Matt holds those notes are spine tingling, you want the notes to go on forever.
3 - Portrait Of My Love
4 - Softly As I Leave You
5 - Walk Away
My final three favourite songs are just superb ballads sung to absolute perfection by Matt.

My tears will fall now that your gone :(

I agree with you about BEFORE YOU GO, I love that song and was so pleased when they decided to include it in THE SINGER'S SINGER box set, a great many lesser known songs spring to mind as well, including ALL THAT REMAINS and LEAVE ME NOW, with a bit of luck we may see some of these in the forthcoming releases.

Robert. this really is a difficult task, but apart from the obvious choices like "Walk Away," "Portrait Of My Love", " From Russia With Love," "Softly As I Leave You" for us, here are just some that can lift you to the skies or simply melt your heart.
Gonna Build A Mountain, You Keep Me Swinging, It's A Wonderful World. One Morning In May,
Can This Be Love, More, The Southern Star, And We Were Lovers
I Have Dreamed, The Sweetest Sounds, A Time For Love.

There you are Robert we could go on and on, and we agree with all your comments. :) :)

Thank you for your kind replies, it seems like I have known everyone for years, it is just like one big happy family on the site. I agree with you Michele that Exodus is such a terrific tune it brings your Dads vocal range into full force, so powerful, melodic and heartbreaking.

My tears will fall now that your gone. :(

I have now submitted the "Rare Monro" up to EMI for consideration. Those tracks are all on there and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I get the green light on these.

I think a lot of people will be surprised at what I have put on there

Hello everyone,

I bought a Matt Monro CD at the weekend.
It is a new release from Matt's earlier recording days - 1967 - 69.
Two CD's put together on one disc.

The CD is called "These years/The late, late show." Very expensive I must say at £5.99!!

I love all the songs here but especially "don't sleep in the subway, There's a kind of hush all over the word" and "Autumn leaves."

I have "Autumn leaves" by Eva Cassidy and my dad has a very nice version by Nat King Cole - also my grandad has this song by Frank Sinatra on a 78 recording!

All versions are very good. What is interesting is this.
You can take one song, any song really and have very good singers record their own version of it.

When you listen to each version because they are so good you think that you are hearing the song for the first time because each artist has their own style and presentation of the song.

There was another Matt CD in the store as well.
I will hopefully get that one soon as I would like to hear his version of "over the rainbow" and "what a wonderful world."

Best wishes to all

Hilary :)

Hello Hilary. There are (2) - 2 on 1 albums available by Matt, of songs he recorded in America, while on the Capitol label in the mid to late 60's.
The first one is - Heres to My Lady/This is the Life. The second one is the one you purchased - These Years/The Late Late Show.
These recordings are without doubt some of the best Matt ever made, especially with musical director Sid Feller.

My tears will fall now that your gone :(

Hello Robert,

Thank you for the info on the recordings.
Yes, they are great arrangements and Matt's phrasing on some of the tracks are amazing.

It's good that these older recordings continue to be digitally remastered and released for all of Matt's newer fans like me!

Re: Before You Go

I listened to this song last night. I can see why it wasn't released before. The vocals are tender, but the arrangement has such a '60s sound to it. It reminds me of a Cilla Black song (e.g., Anyone Who Had A Heart). It may have been appropriate for a B side of a single, but it's not suitable for one of Matt Monro's outstanding albums from the '60s.

The beauty of all of Matt Monro's recordings from the 1960s is that they sound just as fresh and lovely today. Try to say that about other recordings from the 1960s (e.g., Tom Jones, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clarke 5, Petula Clark, and most of Dusty Springfield, whom I love); even though I still like to listen to some of these recordings...it's like a trip back 40 years. But the Matt Monro recordings sound contemporary and timeless. People will always want to listen to them.
