'Matt Monroe'

Post by johnfoyle » Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:22 am

Richard Moore has written of how a break through in his search for Matt's master recordings happend when it was realised that some of them were filed under 'Matt Munro'. Bad as that is it is astonishing when yet another variation of Matt's name goes beyond paperwork in a file and ends up on a high profile CD sleeve. Such is the case with this recent release-

The Amazon listing features 'Monro'. Pick up the cd , as I did today in a store here in Dublin, and , along with 'From Russia With Love' , one reads 'Matt Monroe' on both the sleeve and the actual disc. It is , of course, nit picking on my part and its good to see Matt appearing in a collection which may introduce him to new fans etc. Its still annoying. I didn't buy it so cannot, by the way, tell if Richard's mastering of the track is used.

It is not "nit picking" John-everyone deserves to have their name spelt correctly--especially a great star like Matt. I have often seen it as Mott Monroe too. or Matt Munro.

Personally, I hate it when my name is spelt incorrectly, which happens quite often !!

Sandie Shaw often gets Sandy but I know how you feel Marian, the British people see JOH and you're automatically Johnson - years ago I sat waiting for a hospital appointment and the nurse called Mr. Johnson four times, I said in a loud voice (when nobody replied) if you read it properly you will see it's not Johnson but Johansen. I have had letters addressed to Mr. Gohansen, Mr. Joe Hansen etc, my granny was the same she was a Weston and what can be simpler than that? She got Wilson, Watson, Western!!!!

My maiden name was Clarke--but everyone insisted on leaving the "E" off-and I am always getting my first name spelt with an "O" as in MARION, but everyone here on the Forum spells it correctly, for which I thank them.

I have a poster from the Capitol label advertising 'Pretty Polly and their is a blatant mis-spelling of Matt as MUNRO.

See it in the memorabilia section on page 10 of the photo gallery

We remember when Matt Jnr first appeared at the Beck Theatre about Five years ago, and possibly Matt's first time there, the tickets arrived with his name printed... Matt Munro Jnr.
Our forum friends Len and Freda ( sadly Len has passed away since ) hardly able to contain themselves stepped inside the theatre to immediately lodge their complaint, to which the staff offered their sincere apologies, We barely had chance to utter a word before they assured us that they knew what our complaint was going to be. Alas for this event it was too late, but they haven't made the mistake since.

Anyway some people get our surname wrong and call us SMIFF. :D

I have a cassette somewhere that spells his name MUNRO as well.
Often people spell my name wrong as well, Higton, people often think there is an "h" in the middle, and often pronounce it HIGHTON.

Didn't Michele spell it that way before John ? (in the book or something) :)

'What's in a name?
That which we call a rose
by any other name would smell as sweet.' -
from Juliet to Romeo, by William Shakespeare.
To paraphrase: 'That which we call Monro
by any other name would sound as sweet.'
