Words and Music (Remastered)

Post by Marian » Wed Apr 30, 2008 6:45 am

Play.com are advertising an album for pre-release, Matt Monro and Malcolm Lockyer - "Words and Music" (Remastered).
They state release date as 12/5/2008. Just wondering what this one can be? :?

It will be yet another re-hash of the decca material!

Malcolm Lockyer was the MD for those recordings and no others - which are of course now public domain - drat those copyright laws!

Thanks Richard. I'm sure we'll make sure to only purchase the official releases.
Some of these re-hashes are more expensive that the originals, which doesn't seem right, this one is being advertised at £6.99.

Yes Marian, I noticed it on the hmv website the other day, then I remembered that the "Blue and Sentimental" album was with Malcolm Lockyer.

I just saw this album on HMV's website. It didn't have a track listing. Even though we all have the Decca album, it might be worth purchasing this one just for the cover, which is pretty fabulous.

I see that this has again been released by Rex Recordings, who issued the
earlier Cyril Stapleton CD with tracks that were not by Matt at all.
(I see Michele has now mentioned this in her June updates.)

It states this CD was remastered at Masterpiece Studios in London.

It may say 'Remastered' but this is no guarantee of quality. I have bought some supposedly 'remastered' Cd's in the past which were frankly terrible - some people think that copying something to disc is remastering which is total rubbish.

I can't comment on this CD of course having not heard it, but everyone should be aware that Public Domain recordings are not sourced from the master tapes, but taken from vinyl or shellac discs. Although digital restoration is good, it's not as good as having the original tape that needs little or no restoration. However sometimes they may have taken the recording from another CD which is actually breaking copyright law because if a record company remasters a recording and issues it on CD then the copyright date of that version is the year the CD is issued (For instance the recordings on Matt and Mel are copyrighted in the early nineties). The only legal transfer of a public domain recording is actually from a copy of the record that is more than 50 years old itself.

Not only this of course but the artists themselves (or families) receive no royalties for these discs. When something become public domain anybody can issue the recording and profit from it but the artist appearing on the disc no longer has any involvement. In the USA this is of course a completely different matter!

Do you really like the artwork? I have to say I think it's totally wrong for the release. An empty concert hall (Not even a recording studio) with a Photo of Matt from the late 60's superimposed.

Don't think this is sour grapes on my part - I receive a flat fee for remastering work and no royalties so it doesn't bother me if you buy my version or someone else’s.

All I can say is BUYER BEWARE!
