Sorry everyone-I forgot to check in HMV this morning! Just too much on my mind at the moment-it will probaby be this time next month when I get there again.

I really love listening to Americans etc, talking about our 60's and 70's groups and singers--such a small world.

Here's an update on HMV from Music Week:

HMV CEO Simon Fox has told Music Week that he fully expects the retail stalwart to still be on UK High Streets this time next year – and is keen to potentially increase music’s presence on shelves.

The HMV Group revealed its interim fiscal statement for the first six months of its fiscal year this morning – reporting a £36.4m pre-tax loss for the 26 weeks to October 29.

The company Board said it was confident in a "reasonable expectation that the Group will have adequate resources to continue in operation” – despite admitting that “the economic environment and trading circumstances create material uncertainties which may cast significant doubt on the Group’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

Fund-raising options being considered by the HMV Group, which now holds underlying net debt of £163.7m, include a possible sale of live music giant the MAMA Group.

“The fact is, there are uncertainties: the trading environment is difficult, as you know the High Street’s difficult, the industry’s difficult, and so it’s not unusual in those circumstances to have to put the phraseology that we’ve used,” Fox told Music Week.

“I believe absolutely that we’re in a better position than we were a year ago. We’re providing our customers with an ever-better in-store proposition and we remain a very important route to market for label partners. I expect to be talking to you, hopefully with more positive news this time next year. “

He added: “I have to say that broadly music labels have been very supportive and certainly they’ve been significantly more supportive than some other industries – most notably [video games]. Inevitably there is a range, but broadly they have been supportive. In what have clearly been quite difficult circumstances, the music companies have been good.”

Fox said that 2012 represented a “real opportunity” for music to be placed at the “heart” of HMV’s business – and a potential rise in stock capacity for music label partners.

“The music industry has clearly been a supporter and there’s a real opportunity for us to work even closer with labels [next year], potentially giving more space to music to display back catalogue in a more interesting way,” he said. “We will certainly be wanting to talk with labels about how we can drive both physical product but also digital product harder in our stores in 2012.”

Despite total like-for-like retail sales for the seven weeks to December 17 being down 13.2%, HMV has an additional pre-Christmas Saturday on which to trade this year compared to 2010 - which Fox suggests may be an important saviour.

“The big week lies ahead; one that represents not far off 10% of our year [revenue], to put it into context,” he added. “It’s certainly bigger than many of our summer months. It’s all to play for, and the weekend just gone was encouraging. Let’s see: I think there’s some great product out there, and it’s fingers crossed, frankly, for each and every day - and of course the big Saturday which we didn’t have last year in the run-up to Christmas.”

The exec called on music labels to continue to support the chain, and admitted that if survival is to be achieved: “We can’t do it alone.”

“By working together with suppliers, we can remain for many years on the High Street,” he commented, “promoting new music and promoting our suppliers’ product; doing what we do best. When we have time and space to do what we do best, we do it really well.”

Paul, thanks for the update..now if they could only open HMV's here in the US..especially in San Diego, I'd be their best customer, though I would still go support my indie record store "Record City".

That would be wonderful, Eman. HMV was in a few select cities in the 80s or 90s, but it was never successful. They couldn't compete with Tower. At least you still have Record City. We have a few small independent shops in Washington, but nothing like Tower or HMV or Amoeba.

Paul, I remember the Virgin Megastore was only in LA so I would trek down there or if I was at Cesar's Palace in Las Vegas. I loved Tower and was bummed when they went bankrupt. Though I'm happy with Record City, the manager orders anything I want for me. Thank goodness for indie stores. Japan had a really cool Tower, three floors, but the one in the Philippines was lousy!!

They had a great HMV in both New York & Boston, Tower in Boston was also great but the New York store sucked!

I think HMV online need to re-stock as lots of Matt Monro items are now out of stock. It looks like people are spending their Christmas money.

Not in HMV but I did buy a dvd and a Glen Campbell cd in Fopp (an American cd I hadn't seen before) both were £3 and I also got a dvd for the same in Asda, a movie I saw on the plane last year so that was a good bargain.

The Legends Series (Various Artists on them) has arrived at our local HMV store. One of them that we bought is called "Easy Legends" with a picture of Matt on the front cover and the track on the CD is Portrait Of My Love.

On the other CD that we bought it is called "Sixties Legends" and on the front cover there is a small picture of Matt, Lulu, Adam Faith & Cilla Black but the strange thing is that there are no tracks from Matt or Adam on the CD. We wonder if perhaps this was an oversight as the sleeve notes actually refer to the photographs. :?
