I just think Greg means Steve Lawrence had a big hit with "Portrait of My Love" in America before Matt could release his original version over there

Well at least there was no animosity between Steve and Matt the way Dionne had with Cilla (and is still doing it!).

Much as I like Dionne I eventually lost patience with her over that.

Karl, yeah that is pretty petty on Dionne's part. For me both versions are good and each artist brings their own touch to the song.

I much prefer Cilla's version to Dionne's.

Actually I remember my music teacher at school was enthralled with that record, he used to allow the pupils to bring their own records on a Friday and he actually asked the owner of Cilla's record if he could borrow it.

I met that particularr teacher many years later in a Chinese restarurant and reminded him of that, at that time Burt Bacharach's sound was fairly new and it just amazed him. I knew what he meant as his music amazed me too, I loved it.

Paul, do you have a Mac? I have a Macbook, and all Macs running OSX will play the UK format DVDs, for which I am GRATEFUL to Apple!

That television performance of Matt on Liberace is wonderful. Just enter "Matt Monro Liberace" and it'll come up.

Hey Lindy, I have an IMAC but when you play a "Region 2 PAL" dvd, does it give you a number of times that you can change the Region. On my old Dell it would give 5X before it would be permanent.

Hi Eman,
All you do is pop the DVD in your Mac drive, no matter what format it is, and Voila, instant joy.
I have all of the Matt dvds from the UK and they play on my MacBook just like American format DVDs.
Nothing to set / reset.

Hi Robert,
I always thought Steve Lawrence mimicked Matt's "Portrait". Had it playing in his headphones while he sang it... Steve did do a good job, but the record is so over-produced. Matt's is sublime. sigh.

Thanks Lindy, I have an all region DVD player, but sometimes I want to watch on the computer and didn't know that Apple didn't have that limitation like Dell

Hi Monrovians,
'Mr Lawrence' nearly gazumped Matt a second time with ( and I'm getting REALLY frustrated at the moment because I can't find the section in Michele's book referring to
this incident)..but the upshot was that his (Mr.Lawrences) recording label wanted him to release (My kind of Girl.???) before Matt's version was released in the states and obviously feeling a little guilty Steve Lawrence apparently told his manager "I couldn't do it to the guy (Matt) again" You're all heart Steve.

Often it is not the fault of the singer but the record label they are signed to and what THEY want released.
