Hi Paul, we know that you have said that you probably prefer female singers on this song, there are many excellent female recordings of Hello Young Lovers, Margaret Whiting, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Alma Cogan, Rosemary Clooney, Elkie Brooks all recorded the song and although Deborah Kerr played the part in the film, as far as we know her voice was dubbed by Marnie Dixon, and if you want to hear a really jazzed up version then Lena Horne provides a great rendition.
But we agree with Gray and Marian, Matt's is superb. :D

Hi Lena and Harry. I said the same thing, you know. I called Matts version "staggering".

It was Marnie Nixon not Dixon, who dubbed many singing voices in films.

Yes I have some new's Lena and Harry, some of Debbies songs in "Singin' In The Rain" were dubbed, but not by Marnie Nixon   Also did you know it was CARLTON CARPENTER who duetted with Debbie on "Aba Daba Honeymoon"

Hi all--I just want to say that Johnny Mathis does a really great version of "Hello Young Lovers" and "I have dreamed". Obviously different to Matt, but really beautiful. And Bobby Darin does an uptempo version of "Hello Young Lovers" which is ---interesting :o :o

Hi Robert--that is interesting that Debbie Reynolds was dubbed in "Singing in the Rain" --as she played the part of a singer dubbing another singer --so did the dubber dub Debbie, while Debbie dubbed

Hi Mariana44, I feel like saying duba dub dub three men in a tub for some strange reason   Yes Debbie was dubbing, but Debbie was dubbed       but only on certain numbers. You can tell, can't you when Debbie is actually singing herself.

You got me laughing  there with all those "dub" topics. Anyways, Matt's "Hello Young Lovers" is also one of my favorites. Another Matt's song that I really love listening to over and over again everyday is "Who Can I Turn To". By the way, is this a Matt Monro original? Did anybody make a cover version of this song?

Hi Ralph---well its nice to know that we cheered someone up--but we do not have our answer yet :!: :!:

"Who can I turn to" has been sung by many different singers'--if you go to the "Lyrics" website there are over 60 covers listed--including most of the most popular singers of the day.

It was actually written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, and I think that Anthony Newley was probably the first one to sing it, in his own unusual style---which I liked a lot!!

But yes,. Matt does a really great version too.

Marian, yes there are so many singers who made this recording.
So many off the greats. Matt's was superb, and then the unforgettable and memorable Tony Bennett rendition, and and we couldn't forget Al Martino's version. :) :)

I found Hello Young Lovers on The Late Late Show and listened to it yesterday. My favourites on that album are mostly the Johnnie Spence arrangements: This Is All I Ask, Time After Time, The Shadow Of Your Smile. Also September Song is outstanding. Thus, I listen repeatedly to those four songs and If She Should Come To You, Days Of Wine And Roses, and Autumn Leaves. That's why Hello Young Lovers never made an impression on me. And (big surprise!) I skip Maria each time.

I would rate Hello Young Lovers as:

5 out of 10 for David Whittaker's arrangement (don't like overuse of the violins' downward passage throughout, and the key change, but it does allow Matt Monro to sustain the high note at the end).

10 out of 10 for Matt Monro's vocals
