Your favourite Matt song

Post by DJTanz » Wed Nov 07, 2012 4:53 pm

I have a lot of Matt Monro's CDs and its almost impossible to pick out his best song as there are so many good ones but putting my head on the block I would go for Walk away.
I think the reason this song does it for me is not only is it sang beautifully by Matt it was sang by my father in the pub in the days when pub entertainment was to sing along to a small band.
Apart from Franks "My way" being a favourite you could guarentee a Matt song being sung at least once sometimes more.
I did'nt appreciate his lovely music as a child in the 60s like I do today but the more I listen to Matt Monro the more I regret not listening to it as a child like all kids we were into the Mersey beat.
I still play music from that era but Matt gets a priority play these days.
My father was born in 1930 as Matt and died young like Matt aged 50 in 1980 and he was a good singer though he was no Matt Monro my Dad did the Crooner some justice singing his great songs as Matt did recording them.

I have to agree Walk Away is a knockout song especially the live dvd version

However to spare you the wrath of the fans, please spell Matt's surname correctly, you started off well with Monro but then reverted to Munro twice - -Sandie Shaw gets the same treatment with Sandy!

Anyway welcome and hope to hear more from you. :)

We did have a thread previously on our favourite Matt song--and it was surprising how many different favourites there were---some of them not as well as others. With the recent cds and all the great tracks on there, it maakes it even more dsifficult to choose.

Hope you enjoy your time on this forum.

Sorry didn't know about the old thread as I'm new to this forum and Matts Website.
Karl I have rectified that spelling don't know why I put the U in instead of the O :? .
Senior moment I think, right then now to some more Matt Monro and a beer :D

Sorry DJTanz---I was not criticising you, of course I understand that you would not know of all the games etc that we have had in the past--I just mentioned it in passing, as we nearly all had our own different "favourites".

Thankyou for your welcomes much appreciated...I have been reading a good few storys on here about Matt which I get the impression he was a down to earth guy with his feet on the ground.
One story I remember hearing about him from a source I can't remember is that he was appearing on the Palladium which was televised and the Rat pack were on the same bill.
After the show Sinatra,Dean Martin and Sammy Davis who were renowned boozers and gamblers who socialised hard invited Matt to join them after the show.
Of course it was known if you were asked by Sinatra to join them at polka and you refused it could be very unpleasant and he didn't take it well but Matt being Matt he just wasn't interested and never turned up.
A brave thing to do to turn your back on the ratpack but as far as I know Matt prefered to drink back in his hotel with normal Jo's who were around at the time.
Now I don't know how true this is but I can imagine Matt prefering not be be in the company of the American trio.

Hi DJ, welcome back :)

The story you quoted is just absolutely false 100 per cent. Matt would have loved to have met up with the Rat Pack especially Frank Sinatra but it never happened. He did meet Sammy Davis on numerous occasions as they were great buddies :) ........... The closest Matt came to meeting his idol Frank was when Mr Sinatra was playing the Royal Festival Hall I think it was, but Matt fell after the concert breaking his arm, so the meeting never took place.

Matt was known to prefer to go for a quiet drink rather tham mingle with Celebrities, but he did meet them on most occasions.

Have you read Michele's book The Singers Singer yet, all the infromation you need is contained in those 600 odd pages :)

And of course. Sammy Davis appeared on Matt's "This is your life"-they seemed the best of friends.
