Hi Robert--Paul was perfectly correct about "Bonanza" it was a Western type show, featuring "The Cartright Family" including "Hoss" and "Little Joe" and starring Lorne Greene, and a very young Michael Landon, who became more famous in "Highway to Heaven" and"Little House on the Prairie"--which I can say right now was my favourite TV show ever---I loved it to bits, as I also did Michael Landon--he was wonderful!! Well, I thought so. I've watched the whole series through about 4 times over the years.

And do not forget "Wagon Train"---never missed it.

Marian these were our favourites too, and Of course Bonanza was a Western, we never missed an episode. So it's correction time Sir Robert

and "The little House On The Prairie "and "Wagon Train" with Robert Horton. What about "Gun Law" with James Arness, "Maverick," " Rawhide," " The Virginian" "Wyatt Earp"
These were definitely Westerns Robert

Paul, I will make sure I put on Matt's version of September Song when I get in tonight.

Someone mentioned Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" - does anyone have any of the Verve Record label's modern jazz albums which feature jazz songs by the great singers remixed by modern DJs? I have all three that have been released and there is a really good version of "Peter Gunn" by Sarah Vaughan on one of them and of "What Lola Wants", also by Sarah Vaughan, on one of the others. Well worth getting (though not all tracks work as well as others).

As to theme tunes, I also like The Avengers and Adam Adamant Lives! Remember the latter, with Gerald Harper? The full box set has just been released on DVD.

I KNOW Bonanza was a western, if you read the post correctly you will see I was being VERY "tongue in cheek" by jokingly refering to it as a crime show

Even I got your humour that time, Robert.

I thought it was very funny, as was the Australia comment. When I write these messages, I look down at what's written below to make sure I'm answering everything correctly. So that's why I said "below".

Marian - I enjoyed Little House On The Prairie, but only watched it one time. Melissa Gilbert was wonderful in that show. She's one of the few child TV stars that turned out okay. Ronnie Howard is another.

Jon - I've heard some of those remixed jazz selections---played in record stores. I like current pop music very much, but don't care for the hip-hop beat added to these jazz songs. I haven't heard Peter Gunn though, so that might work. Let us know what you think of September Song. It's one of Matt Monro's greatest moments.

Well September is over. I started a new tradition. At 11:57 pm on the 30th of September I listened to September Song one last time. Next September, I'll listen to it at 12:00 am on September 1. What a beautiful recording. I do a similar thing with This Is All I Ask (another of Matt Monro's best vocals) on my birthday each year!

Matt's rendition of September Song is great - so much so that it doesn't need to be September to listen to it!

As I said, some of the modern remixes of the jazz numbers done by Verve work but some don't. Sarah Vaughn's are enjoyable and there are one or to others I like as well: Ella Fitzgerald's "Slap That Bass" is one which comes to mind, and there are a couple of Nina Simone songs they do which hit the spot too.

Hi everyone,
A little late to join in, but I just wanted to say I enjoyed all the series mentioned earlier, especially Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie. My mother in law always got titles slightly wrong and Bonanza became Bonzana! Also Mario Lanza was Mario Loranza...
Does anyone remember another Western series - Laramie, with John Smith and Robert Horton? That was a great favourite.
I don't know if Wagon Train has been mentioned.
Another programme I loved, though not a Western, was 77 Sunset Strip with Ed Byrnes and Efram Zimbalist Junr. also was it Robert Smith? Not from The Cure!

Going back to music, I also love September Song, but it is lovely to listen to any time of the year.

Hi Marian--yes we did mention "Wagon Train" --- unmissable on a Sunday night with Ward Bond and Robert Horton. I did not know that Robert Horton was in Laramie too.

Does anyone remember when Robert Horton was on the Palladium singing--I bought the EP--with Robert singing "Maria" and "Shenandoah"-I just loved it.

And how about Richard Chamberlain in Doctor Kildare---fabulous. And of course he sang too--the theme tune from Dr Kildare--something like "Three stars will shine tonight, one for my lover". He also recorded some Lps I believe.

And he starred in "The Thorn Birds"---great show--great theme tune--I think I have that tucked away on an old 45".

There are so many of these great shows tucked away somewhere--but as I proved with Bonanza--they do not seem to work these days.

One last programme that I adored, never missed watching it--seen the whole series through several times--the wonderful "The Waltons".

I'm still suprised that Westerns were so popular in England. I only saw a few episodes of Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Funny that you mention The Thorn Birds theme, Marian. I always have to play Henry Mancini's Anywhere The Heart Goes for a lady from Slovenia who works the front desk at the hotel where I play the piano.

I loved The Waltons as well. But I missed some of the episodes through the years.

I don't want to get tired of September Song, so that's another reason I want to save it for September (with a few additional listens in May and November).

Robert - If you need it, here's more evidence of my "odd listening habits". As you know, 2007 is the Year of Elgar---celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth. So on January 1 and June 2 (his actual birthday), I will only listen to Sir Edward Elgar's music. Also Elgar's music will be the first I will perform in January 2007. Still more evidence? Every year in my birthday month of March, I only listen to music by UK artists. I know these listening habits may seem odd, but they provide great fun and enjoyment for me!

Hi Marian and Marian, another reminder of Hylda Baker, she always got her words mixed up too, trying to sound rather posh.
We remember all these programmes.
Marian it was Robert Fuller who played in Laramie, but he took over Robert Horton's part in Wagon Train when Horton left A friends daughter had pictures of Robert Horton pinned up all over her bedroom walls.
Doctor Kildare was unmissable, and what about Emergency Ward Ten with nurse Carole Young played by Jill Browne, and of course not forgetting Dr Chris Anderson played by one of our favourite DJs
Desmond Carrington.
The Thornbirds was also a great series and remembering that Rachel Ward was such a beautiful girl.
Marian, we agree with you, "September Song" is a beautiful song and , just like "April Showers," or "One Morning In May" "June In January" even, we play these songs any time.
