Should Have Been a Hit!!!!

Post by ROBERT M. » Sat Aug 25, 2007 10:19 pm

OK everyone. Please tell us which song recorded by Matt (whether it was released as a single, as b side or on an album etc..) should have been a massive hit for Matt. Please do not include Matts minor hits, as they were indeed hit song's for Matt. Matt recorded hundreds of songs in total, so please choose any of those other non hit songs.

You can have as many goes as you like on this, but only one song per post.

I will start off with a single release of Matts, which never reached the chart's at all :( It has become one of my favourite Matt songs, which I discovered on the breathtaking RARE MONRO - it is "WHERE IN THE WORLD" a truly wonderful ballad, which should have, in my opinion, been a rather massive hit for Matt. Truly WONDERFUL.
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,

As a side note, can anyone please explain why three of Matts most enthralling performances on disc HOW SOON............FRIENDLY PERSUASION..............and BEYOND THE HILL have been so very hard to get hold of on any of Matts recent releases :?: has HOW SOON ever been released on ANYTHING in the UK :?:  these are three magnificent Matt songs which should have more exposure to the public.

Robert, How Soon was reissued on the Matt Sings double cd on the emi mfp label. I agree it is a great song, superbly sung by Matt, as always, of course.
In my opinion "One Day" should have been a big hit, I love this song, it's great lyrics and wonderful arrangement, again Matt at his very best.

Another beautiful rendition by Matt is on the adorable Maria 8) I know others on here (the two Marians) like Johnny Mathis' version of the song, but the effort and pure sensational phrasing by Matt on this fragile yet thunderous recording is awesome. Definitely one of Matts finest moments on record 8) it never fails to thrill and amaze, when listening to Matts recording - breathtaking 8) 8)

It is true that I do love the version by Johnny Mathis of "Maria"--but I also love Matt's version too. I will never forget seeing the video clip at the Fan Club Meeting of Matt singing this song-it was magic !!

I agree Ed. The Lady Smiles is 2 minutes of pure magic.

Staying with The Rare Monro, I will suggest: The Touch Of Your Love. That would have sounded so nice on easy listening radio stations in the 1970s.

THANKS PAUL --GLAD YOU AGREE, I JUST PLAYED "FOR THE TOUCH OF YOUR LOVE", YES A VERY NICE SONG.
ANOTHER THAT I THOUGHT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT WAS "ROSES AND ROSES".
I HEARD THAT ONE EARLY ON WHEN I WAS JUST GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH MATT---COULDN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT ---NO TELLING HOW MUCH I PUT IN THE "JUKE BOX" AT 10 CENTS (THAT TELLS YOU HOW LONG AGO THAT WAS) A SHOT.

Ed -- Roses and Roses would have been the B side, right? Do you recall what was on the other side? How I miss jukeboxes that played 45 singles. Perhaps they still exist in the Florida and the UK, but in Washington, they are mostly all full CDs. No charm or excitement whatsoever. :(

This time I'll submit How Could I Ever Leave You. That would have sounded great on AM radio in the 1970s! It's such a happy song. :D But it took me months before I warmed up to it.

BEFORE YOU GO was the other side to AND ROSES AND ROSES Paul on the UK issue, but I am not sure if it was the same in the USA. This is another great song as well. :D

Yes john Before You Go is in my top 6 Matt songs - I really love it 8) 8) but I doubt it was released as an A side in the US, or even a B side

So Matt was on the US jukebox's in the 60's was he Jeff and Ed :?: which is quite an achievement, I would imagine, as Matt only had two smallish hit's in the US.
