First of May

Post by Gray » Tue Jan 28, 2014 4:35 pm

I watched a lovely film the other night from 1970, it was called 'Melody'.
It starred Mark Lester and Jack Wild.
The soundtrack was written by The Bee Gees, and I was really taken a-back when 'First of May' started to play!
I had no idea they wrote this song!
A friend told me he bought The Bee Gees version as a single at the time of the films release.

Gray, I remember that movie. I think I may have the soundtrack somewhere. It was really promoted heavily in the teen magazines at the time as Mark Lester and Jack Wild were teen idols. I do like the movie a lot and how innocent it was but had adult themes saturated in it.

I knew it was written by The Bee Gees, but had no idea it was from a film.

First Of May was in the charts in February 1969 so perhaps they worked the fim around the song.

Gray I'm sorry but I had to laugh at you not knowing it was a Bee Gees composition, people of my age who grew up on that kind of music tend to think younger people should know all that.

My Malaysian neighbout makesme laugh as he doesn't know any of the singers or groups I mention to him and yet he knows Status Quo and would you believe he likes the works of Robert Burns and goes to an annual Burns Supper, I went with him a few years ago.

You are right, Karl.
Robert Stigwood offered money to David Putnam to make a film in an effort to push on The Bee Gees career, David Putman then turned to Alan Parker to write the story, who simply wrote about his school days.

Eman,
Yes, it was a perfect mixture of youthful innocence and raging hormones! :)
