What do you remeber Matt for?

Post by Josh » Sun Mar 27, 2011 11:34 pm

Well over in the review section for the book, there has been some dicussion about starting a thread about what we the fans remember Matt most for. So to get the dicussion going, I'll post first. :)

As many of you now know I was introduced to the Matt Monro sound though James Bond, the theme to From Russia With Love was the first exposure I ever had to his voice and needless to say it's stuck with me since. I guess when I was younger that is what I remembered Matt for, he provided the theme to my favourite Bond movie but now I remember him for so much more.

However I remember Matt now as being the finest singer Britain has ever produced, I remember him for providing classic after classic, he is unforgettable. He is the voice of so many musical treasures that it's now impossible to choose a favourite, I remember Matt most for his music and that will never change, he just makes you feel good and that is a rare gift. A gift he utilised perfectly bringing happiness and musical perfection to many all over the world.

So what do you remember Matt most for? A certain hit? His concert work? His TV work? I look forward to reading all your replies. :D

His distinctive voice, and the fact that he always sang each and every song perfectly. :D

I remember Matt for introducing me to wonderful music, many happy years of record hunting and collecting and for having the finest voice this country has ever produced.

The quality that first attracted me to Matt's voice
was his unique nasal intonation; the pleasing sound
we all make when we are recovering from a head cold.
I believe it results from a dilation of the nasal cavities,
except of course that Matt's compelling sound was
a permanent blessing which, allied to his other ear-pleasing
attributes and personable character traits, made him
such an irresistible performer.

I remember Matt--for his cd "Complete Heartbreakers"---which was the first cd of Matt Monro that I bought-but of course I was familiar with his voice--but that cd changed things for me, as George and I listened to it many times, and I also bought a few more cds. Then over the years, they seemed to be forgotten, until just over 6 years ago, when George became very ill, and one of his carers came in and heard Matt on the radio singing "Softly as I leave you"--and she said that she had just bought the cd of "Complete Heartbreakers"--which she had playing in her car radio constantly, and especially loved "Softly as I leave you".

"I have that cd" I said to myself, and dug it out, and played it for the first time in many years-and it was like rediscovering Matt all over again. George and I listened many times to Matt over the next few months. By then I was hooked on Matt Monro--I spotted the article in the paper about the old tape that Michele had found in the garage, bought the dvd, did a search and found this Forum, at a difficult period of my life---and here I still am.
Plus, I now have well over 50 of Matt's cds.

So overall, I remember Matt and the times I listened to him with George, especially the last few months during his illness, and also for bringing me to this Forum.

Hi Robert--yes, I do have well over 50 Matt cds--Many of them are compilations--but I am sure I am not the only one-I suspect there may be bigger collections around.

I remember Matt for his voice being part of my life since first hearing him sing 'Love Walked In' on the radio in 1960.
His beautiful voice has shared my highs and lows for over 50 years :D

For me, the main thing are the beautiful ballads he recorded. I can play them hundreds of times and I never get tired of them.
