Well seeing as we now have a thread for what we most remember Matt for I thought it might be interesting to find out what were members first Matt Monro purchases be it either a 45, LP, cassette, CD, DVD etc.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of responses we get!

My first purchase of Matt's was on a compilation cd called "True Love - 16 songs from the Heart", but my first actual full cd of Matt's was the wonderful "A Time For Love" compilation album.

Our first purchase was Hits of Yesterday 1965.

From then onwards we have been avid collectors of all Matt's music.

As far as I can remember, I am almost sure it was the cd "Complete Heartbreakers".

Some years later, I bought a double cd set of "Complete Heartbreakers|"

Can't really remember, I know we had the LPs of Heartbreakers and More Heartbreakers, also The Impossible Dream, followed by tapes in the car, I'm not sure which ones at the time though. :D

Although I'm like Robert, my very first Matt purchase was The Very Best of Matt Monro, first issued on CD in 1995 I believe.

My first purchase was a casette tape around 1986 called The Best of Matt Monro ... Volume I. It was on Liberty, L4N 10258. I still remember the record store I bought it from. It was a great independent record store in an upscale mall, but the store is long gone. :(

The tracks are:

Side 1:
From Russia With Love
The Girl I Love
Unchained Melody
Around the World in Eighty Days (which is the incorrect title of that song)
Softly As I Leave You

Side 2:
Love is a Many Splendored Thing
Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)
Memphis in June
Let's Face the Music and Dance
Here and Now

Since this was a Best Of collection, I thought that The Girl I Love was one of his biggest hits. But then it never (or rarely) appeared on any single CD compilation.

Like Robert and Josh, my first CD purchase was The Very Best of Matt Monro, but he has a tux on the cover and not a red cardigan. And mine is from the early 90s so you may have a later reissue. I listened to it last night as it remains one of my favorites because it contains This Time, For Mama, and We're Gonna Change The World. Of course, now an automatic skip is The Impossible Dream since we have the clean version on the Complete Singles Collection. At the last Fans Reunited, I think I heard that the sales were at 20,000. I wonder how much it's sold by now?

My first purchase well the first one to come up on the computer at the store where I ordered was "The Very Best of Matt Monro" the one where he's wearing the red cardigan! Also on the same order was "The Rare Monro", "This Is The Life/Here's To My Lady" and "Walk Away/Invitation to the Movies" 2lps on 1 CD sets. :D

Hi Paul,

I think Michele would have actually said 200,000 rather than 20,000

The Very Best of Matt Monro is actually and odd one as there are two different CD's with the same title. Both discs combined have sold quite a lot, probably well on the way towards the million (especially when you include the original Vinyl editions on Columbia and MFP).

Everytime Matt is featured on TV or instances like The Chris Evans Show, all of a sudden the sales of this spike. For instance Chris Evans appearence through the red cardigan version into the Amazon top 10 for a couple of days (Both the Greatest and Singles also jumped briefly into the top 100).

Whilst sales of these look high, I should just point out that the original compilation was issued in 1974 and issued on CD (Possibly Matt's First) in around 1982/3, so it's had plenty of time to get there!

Interestingly whilst I have all of Matt's recordings I have never bought a copy of either of the Very Best ofs!

Richard

My first purchase was in 1973 in Spain. It was memorable because it was my first time traveling by plane. I flew with a group from Boston to Malaga. I no longer have the LP but I'll forever have the memory!

I'm not surprised Richard, if your fortunate to own all the recordings I guess a best of is a bit redundant lol.
