Matt Uncovered - The Rarer Monro

Five years in the making it delivers exactly what it says on the cover. Stored in the vaults of EMI and the BBC for more than four decades this sees 50 + wonderful new tracks as well as a smattering of unearthed jingles that Matt recorded for some of the most prestigious products of the day.

8 days to go until the new CD is out. If we are lucky we might even get it a day or two early.

Thanks Lindy G. Yeah I'm really close to my family. Heck my Dad and I see eye to eye on Matt but he can't for the life of him figure out what is it about Morrissey that I find so appealing. LOL Must be the age thing!!
Hi Eman,
You and me both.....Matt and Morrissey! They may not seem, to some ,to have much in common, but both are BEAUTIFUL singers, charismatic performers, and their fans love them for their sincerity.
Did your Dad get to see Matt in concert? And have you seen Morrissey in concert?

Lesley Gore, thumbs up! California Nights, She's a Fool, she is a very strong woman who has always refused to be forced to be somebody she wasn't. She's still strong.

I also love Matt's version of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", I think "These Years" is a superb album, there is perhaps one track on this album I am not too keen on. His version of "Don't Sleep In The Subway" is brilliant too.
Yes, John, YES. I was astonished when I heard both of these songs, only this year for the first time, from Matt. After having only heard the two great women's versions (Petula has been one of my favorites since very young childhood, too), I was amazed that I'd never heard these two of Matt's played in America (due to the business management/promotion inadequacy once again, I suppose) . America has always seemed to prefer the carnival act to class, anyway. Just think of this:
Both Tiny Tim and Boy George have been bigger sensations during their moments, nation wide, than Matt.
If only Matt had added that tongue clicking (of Tiny Tim's, used in "Tiptoe") to his reportoire!

It was the tongue clicking, Karl, that put Tim over the top in America.
I crack up when I hear that recording now, because when I was in first grade, they made us do that same silly noise in a Christmas concert song. "Up on the rooftop with Old' St. Nick...."..well I'm sure you can imagine how Tim-esque "click click click"ing got worked into this performance masterpiece.
My first grade teacher must have been a fan of Tiny Tim's.
If only she'd have heard Matt's recordings, maybe my first grade class and I would have learned to SING!

America is loony.

All I can remember of Tiny Tim is Tip Toe Through The Tulips, don't know anything about his tongue clicking, do you mean like Miriam Makeba did with The Click Song?

Hi Lindy,
No my Dad never got to see Matt in concert, but I believe some of his relatives or my Mum's relatives did when Matt performed at the Araneta Colliseum in the Philippines in the 60's. Yep I saw Morrissey numerous times both with The Smiths and solo. Personally I like him better without the Smiths.

It's funny you mention that clicking sound on "Up On The Housetop", when I was in the second grade in 1971/1972we had to do that to. I thought it was kinda dumb and wanted to do the Jackson 5 version along with the other kids as that was much cooler. LOL!!

Oh yeah the record store I go to the manager Graham and his Dad are also a mega Matt fans and has pre-ordered the cd's for both him and me (well our Dads) and hopefully San Diego will be chilling out with the new cd soon!! Both my Dad and I can't wait.

Karl, the clicking is at the end of Tip Toe through the Tulips....but maybe it's only in the American version.
The copy I bought from Itunes to "surprise" my sister with on a compilation of "Great Songs" (features Matt and DUSTY and Petula, Peter and Gordon, Glen Campbell "The Last Time I Saw Her Face" and "True Grit"), Matt's "One Day" live in Manila, Matt's "Unchained Melody" THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!, Peter Sellers' rendition of "Unchained Melody", a very close second to Matt's, and more Matt). :D

Oh, and, I don't know Miriam's Click song, but I saw her in the Paul Simon "Graceland" concert in Africa, and she was wonderful in that with Paul and the band. Great concert!

Hi Eman! That had to be one of the great concert experiences of all time, at the Araneta Colliseum. I can't hear "One Day" from that, enough. I like when Matt had to go get a drink "out of the bot-tle" after that incredible song performance. So adorable. I'm an old (in more ways than one!) Smiths fan. I was actually in England when I heard them for the first time and became an instant Smiths fan. Bought their CDs while there, for driving around Yorkshire and the Lake District. Great times. I really love Johnny Marr's guitar playing for The Smiths, I thought his playing and Morrissey's crooning were wondrous together. Still do.

It's funny you mention that clicking sound on "Up On The Housetop", when I was in the second grade in 1971/1972we had to do that to. I thought it was kinda dumb and wanted to do the Jackson 5 version along with the other kids as that was much cooler. LOL!!

Eman, this is hilarious that you were made to do this too! Now it makes me wonder if the composer wrote it that way, and if Tiny Tim had been forced to do the same, as a child?! Maybe he thought that was REQUIRED in a song?

You STILL have a "record store" in San Diego? That's amazing! I haven't seen a record store in America in more than a decade, maybe more than two decades. I think that is one of the great losses of our culture. I guess a forum like this one is a replacement for the old record store in a community. Thanks Eman.

Hi Lindy--I did something similar a while ago---I sorted out my favourite tracks, sung by Matt, also by Johnny Mathis-another of my top singers, and put them both singing the same songs on the same cd--songs like "Hello young Lovers" "I have dreamed" " More" "Friendly Persuasion" lots more--- so it was easy to compare the 2 different versions. It was quite easy to doi, as they are all on my Itunes list--not sure I could do it with songs I do not like--they just do not go onto my Itunes.
Mariana, I think that must be a masterpiece compilation you made. Yes, Johnny is one of the amazing ones too. (Even "Marshmallow World in the Winter"....not sure if that's the title or just the lyric that sticks in your brain cells like gooey melted marshmallow, after hearing it.) Sounds like you made a Do-It-Yourself MASTERPIECE with that compilation. And such different voices, singing in different keys, so that was a great idea you had to do that.

I combined John Barry and orchestra in the studio selections with some of the same tunes performed by Nancy Sinatra, our Matt, and Shirley. On every song where one of these singers is featured, I prefer the sung version. btw, the original single track of "Midnight Cowboy" is so much better (faster tempo, more guitar, more harmonicas) than the track that was included on the soundtrack album. I guess they needed the slower pacing in the movie, but the single is so much better to listen to and I'm glad that I found it on a used CD that featured it. The single we had is long gone!

I did that some years ago, orther singers singing songs Dusty had also recorded. I think I ended up with eight cd's, would have been more but how many versions of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me etc can a body stand?

I included the best and dropped the rest (I'm a poet and I don't know it!!!)

Lindy, yeah we have a quite a few record stores, however "Record City" is the main one I go to every Saturday or Friday when I'm not working. The Saturday crowd is the same bunch of guys with some newbies looking for some classic rock records to play on their ION turntables. LOL. I'd describe it as a little shop and it's like the movie "High Fidelity" and "Empire Records" but the staff is friendlier. There's this one store that I don't go to called "Taaaangg" because that's the record store where the "heads" and "freaks" go and all they sell are Marilyn Manson type records and "bongs" behind the counter..plus their records are trashed and overpriced. There's a really good shop in L.A. called "Amoeba" and they have one in San Francisco also.
