Lionel Richie

Post by Hilary » Tue Jun 19, 2007 10:16 am

Hi Everyone,

Are there any Lionel fans out there?!
I love most of his lovely songs but I do prefer the slower ones!
His voice is very laid back and most importantly, you can hear ALL of the words to the songs! :D

Last year Lionel appeared on "Friday night is music night" on Radio 2. His show was one of the best ever! :D

Hi Hilary

My wife Amanda LOVES Lionel Ritchie and has seen him live, she said he was marvelous.
She is also convinced he was looking right at her when he sang "Hello".
  :)

I like The Commodores at lot, also.
I remember reading once that his idea for the Commodores was that he wanted them to be the black Beatles - around for a decade, and writing music that was progressive and had cultural implications.
Nowt like setting yourself a target, is there? :)

What are your favourite Ritchie songs?

Gray

Not a fan particularly; pleasant songs but the voice goes nowhere. I do remember the video for "Hello" with the embarrassing face sculpture, once named as one of the worst pop videos ever.

Commodores

The only Lionel Ritchie song I like is You Are: a huge airplay hit in the US, but I don't know if it charted in the UK. The rest (especially Truly and Hello) are too sugary and sappy. Like Gray, I prefer the songs he did with the Commodores (Still, Just To Be Close To You), but definitely not Brick House ... overplayed on the radio, TV, ice skating shows, etc., in the US.
