ANDY PRIOR
ANDY PRIOR
While searching through my British Big Band tapes I played some songs by Andy Prior & his Night Owls.
In checking out his info, some reviews stated he was the "Best English singer since Matt Monro"(Exaggerated)!!
He did sound a little bit like Sinatra and he did tour in the 90s with "Magic of Sinatra" Concerts.
He also had a short-lived TV show in 2004 titled "Big Band Crazy" with arrangements by Bryan Pendelton (ex-SLO).
I read that he is trying a "comeback" in 2011 with dates in Edinburgh & Blackpool with a new band.
Have any of you seen him in person in the 80s & 90s & what he is coming along now??

Peter and I have seen him in concert Henry many years ago, and I have a couple of his albums.
I believe Mark Porter knows him well, and I think he said Andy was present at Michele's book/cd launch recently.

Re: ANDY PRIOR
Same here Marian. We also have a few CD's.
We actually have a large poster on our spare bedroom wall from his appearance at the Grimsby Auditorium in his Magic Of Sinatra tour.Very, very good it was too.
Wish we had realised he was at the EMI launch would have enjoyed speaking to him.
We read that he was touring again but not seen any sign of him around our area.
His career seems rather spasmodic does any one know why?

Re: ANDY PRIOR
From what I remember, most all of Andy Prior and the Night Owl's concerts were in the North of England, and at one time they were resident band at The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool.

Re: ANDY PRIOR
We really like Andy Prior as he is a good all round entertainer. We haven't heard much about him for quite some time and hopefully we will hear more of him next year.

Re: ANDY PRIOR
I spent quite a long time talking to Andy at the Launch. We have a mutual freind!
He's a very nice guy, and very knowledgeable about music and Big bands - He ought to be, He worked with Billy May for a while and has some great stories!
He's been out of the business for a couple of years due to ill health, but is now back rebuilding his career with reformed Night Owls and currently making a new album - He's sent me a few tracks and they sound great!

Re: ANDY PRIOR
Thanks for that info Richard. We did hear that Andy Prior had health problems some while ago, so it's nice to know that he's back in business and making a new album.
We saw him some years ago at the Sinatra Music Society, and at Blackpool.
He's not only a good singer but a great trombonist too. Very versatile.

Re: ANDY PRIOR
Thanks for all your great info, & I will look for his new CD in the future or let me know when it is released....
I read that he had a DVD released in the early 2000s, but if he did, I am sure it would not be capatible with stateside players.
I think that most of the You Tube Videos are from the DVD or his TV show!?

Re: ANDY PRIOR
Hey Henry, about being the dvd being capable. You should be able to get a all region player at any Japanese market in the Bay Area. If you have a Mitsuwa Food Store, they normally carry them and they are reasonable. I got mine there and now am enjoying DVDs that I thought I'd never get to watch, stuff like Matt, Val Doonican and some of my favourite British shows like Ultimate Force etc.
Re: ANDY PRIOR
I do have a Toshiba DVD Video Recorder/Player that is older than my Samsung Blu-Ray Player, but the Toshiba does play DVD-Ram Versions 1 & 2.,
and also "ALL" & "PAL" versions. I have 2 or 3 DVDs that were recorded in England that I have been able to play, but the clarity is only average.

Re: ANDY PRIOR
Hey Henry, guess it also has something to do with the TV playback signals. So far the Panasonic one I got at the Japanese market is doing the trick. My Dad and Mum are pretty jazzed cuz I got them the Matt Monro dvds.
Re: ANDY PRIOR
I just heard Andy Prior on a 4-CD Set that I ordered from Amazon.com/uk titled "60 all-Time Golden Greats' that
features Andy & His Band doing "Cool Swing 1 & 2", "Lush Ballads" & "Strictly Instrumental" and most of them are
very good especially his versions of "At Last", "Recipe for Love", "I'm a Fool to Want You", & "West Side Story" Medley.
I hope he has recovered from his health issues, and that his current comeback is successful, as his talent comes thru
in these older recordings and in my opinion he is only topped by our Matt Monro!! If you don't have this CD Set,
I recommend it highly & it costs 19-20.00 British Pounds at Amazon.com
