ELVIS PRESLEY DUETS ALBUM

Post by mariana44 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 10:54 pm

I was just reading that Elvis is due to be number 1 this Christmas with this album, which features Elvis singing Christmas songs with singers such as Leann Rimes, Carrie Underwood.

Has anyone else heard or read of this album--and what are your thoughts.

I think it is going to be very interesting-and I guess a lot depends on the choice of songs--I had a Christmas cd by Elvis once, but I knew none of the songs on it. And as far as I know Elvis did not sing many of the great "classic" Christmas songs.

Elvis was a big favourite of mine when I was a teenager-in fact my first really big favourite--posters in my room etc etc---I could only afford 78's in those days, but I would pile them on top of my old record player---you know--the type where the next one automatically drops down, onto the pile below--it was a miracle none ever got broken. So basically, I still have a soft spot for Elvis--and I guess I always will--especially those tracks from the first few years.

Thank you Mariana for the great news!

I have always liked Elvis. I think he was a very dynamic live performer. On records and CDs, I prefer his ballads to the rock and roll songs.

An Elvis Christmas duet album sounds implausible,
Marian(a), but certainly not impossible in these
technologically miraculous times. Also the concept
would be consistent with Elvis's adherence to Christianity.
His recording archive contains a couple of very
listenable gospel albums, suffused with sincerity.

Robert, I cannot remember an Elvis Christmas album
from the past; however, my old powers of recall have
been diminished by the rigorous march of Father Time.

Yes Terence, such a development would be a welcome
Christmas present.

Elvis' Christmas Album is the fourth album by Elvis Presley on RCA Victor Records, LPM 1951, released in October 1957, and recorded at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. It has been reissued in numerous different formats since its first release, issued initially in a deluxe limited edition, catalogue LOC 1035. It spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, and was the first of two Christmas-themed albums Presley would record, the other being Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas, released in the early 1970s. As of 2007, Elvis' Christmas Album is the top-selling holiday release of all time with 9 million in sales.

Couldn't find any info on a new duets album though.

Thanks Marian, you are the forum's doyenne
of data provision. Young Robert was right about
the existence of an Elvis Christmas album(s).
I am reminded of a piece I wrote last year
to commemorate Elvis's thirtieth anniversary:

PARALLEL LIVES

Elvis, anagrammatically,
still lives.
From ordinary origins
he rose to kingdom,
inspired adulation
and ruled with joy.
His love for the Father
outpours from his repertoire
of gospel songs,
and his betrayal,
in silver dollars,
was in manifold millions.
Diffused with divine mastery,
his spectacular sojourn
ended ignominiously
at Heartbreak Hotel.

Elvis Aaron Presley,
8 January 1935 - 16 August 1977

I don't particularly have anything against him, and I suppose he did have a pleasant enough voice, but I can't help feeling that there is something just a little bit too "tacky" about Elvis. Sorry.

I suppose we should give Elvis credit for being,
like Frank Sinatra, a mould-setter, an original
who blazed a trail for others to follow. Also, unlike
most rock 'n' roll singers, Elvis was possessed
of a tuneful singing voice.

PS It's good to have the pleasure of your company

I loved your piece on Elvis, Keith. For me, he just brings back memories of teenage, carefree days.

Thanks Marian(a). At least it has the virtue of being topical;
it's Elvis's anniversary on Saturday. I think he was a decent
guy who was emotionally ill-equipped to cope with the pressure
of permanently being under the publicity microscope.

A few notes about Elvis on this poignant anniversary.
It appears he was of Welsh descent. There is a hillside
near the village of Solva in Pembrokeshire named after
St Elvis, who baptized St David in the fifth century. In south
Pembrokeshire there is a St Elvis farm; just twenty miles
to the north are the Preseli Hills. Elvis's parents were Vernon
and Gladys, Welsh names and his stillborn twin, Jesse, was
given the Welsh middle name, Garon. The clincher, of course,
is that Elvis could sing rather well.

How strange things turn out.....................if Elvis had been the stillborn twin, popular music would have had a different history

Maybe Jesse would have been able to sing as well Robert, and if neither had been stillborn we might have had the singing brothers.
We have been to Graceland as part of a Southern States tour a few years ago. We were very impressed with the homeliness of the place. The only parts that we thought was rather garish and overdone were the graves, but then these were done by those that came after, and decorated by the public.

Hi All

I absolutely love Elvis's music, but if you tale a look on Youtube and search for If I Can Dream you'll see listing for a 'duet' with Celine Dion.
I adore If I Can Dream but didn't think this duet was entirely succesful so I would hope the new album works a bit better than this.
