THE SHADOWS NEW CD SET

Post by karl » Thu Sep 05, 2013 8:57 am

I have just pre-ordered a 6 cd Shadows set called The Early Years 1959-1966, there are some tracks new to cd - however the label quoted is Parlophone! The Shadows were on Columbia in these days so why the change I wonder? No doubt Richard will be able to shed some light on this.

Hi Karl,

Yes a good looking set! It's on Parlophone as that is the trademark now being used by what was EMI UK. The EMI trademark belongs to Universal and Columbia is leased to Sony.

Quick history of Columbia

The Columbia graphophone company was started in the 1880's and it's British arm eventually joined with the gramophone and typewriter company and split from it's US parent this compnay eventually became EMI. Columbia UK & US were separate companies for a long time. In the US they were eventually renamed CBS (after it's parent companies move into broadcastng). Columbia UK continued as a UK label until the mid 1980's when EMI shut down alot of it's old trademarks and lummped them all togther into an EMI label.

Sony then bought CBS and ran the label as Sony for a while, but decided to revert to Columbia however it did not own the rights to the name worldwide so had to lease the name back from EMI UK. Who owns the trademark now i'm not sure. Maybe it was evetually sold to Sony, or it may still be leased from Parlophone or Universal i'm not sure.

In anycase they can't use the name any longer.

When EMI was split up, it was decided that of the EMI UK owned labels, Parlophone was the most well known (Being the original Beatles label of course) and so they became for a short while the Parlophone Label Group. When Warners took over they decided to keep the name and it is currently used for all of the output from the old EMI UK stable of artists.

You will notice that the two new Matt albums are also Parlophone as are the upcoming Cilla Black & Buzzcocks CD/DVD sets that I worked on.

I have always had a soft spot for the original Parlophone label so in many ways i'm glad to Matt back on it!

Oh you worked on Cilla's too Richard I have also pre-ordered that mainly for the dvd.

I knew the Parlophone label from when we first bought a radiogram and had some 78's of Jimmy Shand and Ron Goodwin.

Yes, but only the DVD - Which i think you'll enjoy. It's a real rarity! Quality isn't too bad. Pity that they could only find the 45 minute B&W version rather than the original longer colour version, but that's all there is.

Richard
