Leon Jackson

Post by paul jh » Tue Oct 28, 2008 12:39 am

Did anyone purchase Leon Jackson's debut album? It made #4 on yesterday's chart. Many people are saying this is a flop compared to Leona Lewis, but I'd rather listen to Leon Jackson any day. I bought his single Don't Call This Love when I was in Yorkshire and it's excellent. I think he has a lovely, mature voice with a natural style that's not overdone.

He has certainly not made such an impact as Leona, and I have heard unfavourable comments abouit his new single--but I rather like it---and in fact, I liked his first single, which I bought--not sure if I would buy a whole cd---depends on the songs really.

Plus I do not like Leona's voice, and I would rather listen to Leon.

I haven't bought it yet, he sang the single on the X Factor a couple of weeks ago, I quite liked it.

I listened to the samples of the songs on hmv's website. It seems like a variety of mostly ballads, a blues song, several swing, and a bossa nova. There doesn't seem to be any of the current pop style, so that's why it doesn't appeal to the mainstream young audience. The only standards I detected were: A Song For You, You Don't Know Me, and Misty Blue.

Sounds quite a good choice of songs.

If that is the same song "A song for you" that the Carpenters recorded , I really like that one--I do know Misty Blue, but have not heard it very often-if it is the same song--and I do know the other one too.

A Song For You is the Leon Russell song that starts "I've been so many places in my life and time". I'm not sure I've heard the Carpenters sing it. I'm familiar with Donny Hathaway's version.

I always liked the Dorothy Moore version of Misty Blue from the 1970s.

Which song Marian?

A Song For You
Misty Blue
You Don't Know Me

:?:

I thought Our Song was one of his oldies but goodies. Does he have a new album called Our Song?

Jack Jones sings a lovely version of A Song For You. He began his concerts with it this year in the U.K. and recorded it a long, long time ago. :D :D He has an album entitled A Song for You.

That is the same song that the Carpenters sing--plus I have a couple of other versions of it--cannot remember who at the moment.
As far as I know "Misty blue" was only ever sung by Dorothy Moore--the other song I know is "You don't know me"

Andy Williams also did a nice version of "A Song For You", I think it is on the "You've Got A Friend" album, Marian.

Leon Jackson has already been dropped by Simon Cowell's label Syco. Very sad as he had a unique style and some good songs on his debut album.

Well, nice to see you back Paul

I had read that about Leon Jackson somewhere. He never seemed to get any publicity but I think he did tour last year.

I think Leon's problem was that he lacked a certain "charisma" that is needed these days.
