Some nostalgic postings there---I well remember Elsie and Doris Waters, and Jack Warner in "The Blue Lamp"--followed by "Dixon of Dock Green "

Bonar Colleano was one of my favourite actors when I was a young girl--but he was killed at a young age in a road accident. 2 of my other favourites were Jeff Chandler and the gorgeous Tyrone Power--both of them also died unexpectedly.

I remember Donald Houston best for the original film of "The Blue Lagoon" which I just loved--it also starred a very young Jean Simmons. When the film is shown now, it is always the remake with Brooke Shields , but I do not think it was a patch on the original.

Remakes rarely are.

That IS where they got the idea from for Jack Warner to play "George Dixon" :) :) very good choice :D I remember watching it every Saturday night when we went to visit our Grandparents.

Kathleen Harrison seemed such a down to earth and warm character. She passed away at the age of 103, just three months away from her next birthday. As L&H mentioned, Kathleen was born up north, in Blackburn, Lancashire to be precise.

Bonar Colleano was 34 after a road accident.

Jeff Chandler 43 after surgery.

Tyrone Power 44 after a heart attack.

This message board has been very uplifting (not) just lately, with Lillian Board and the rest :( :( EDIT- Just realised this was my "elevenses post" I could have picked a happier subject

Just going back to the original title of this thread---sorry Mike !!!---but the name is Petula Clark----without an "E".

I know this because my maiden name was "Clarke" with an "E" , and it is something that I am always conscious of, when I see the name Clark.. or Clarke. My sisters name was Carole--and she always had to say Carole with an e and Clarke with an e, because they were nearly always left off !!

Well Robert--that was very quick work--I must say that you are the most efficient secretary that I have ever had !!

But that does not mean that you are getting a rise in pay

I grew up quite near Donald and his brother, Glyn Houston. They lived in Tonypandy where I went to school. Didn't know them personally, but always looked out for their films.

Some posts here mentioned "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. I agree it is indeed a lovely song but quite high pitched, so I was disappointed, believe it or not, with Johnny Mathis's version as he takes the final high note down, presumably because he just couldn't reach it. It's the sort of song that would have been a gift to him in his younger years though.

HI Jon--you are quite right about JM being unable to reach those high notes now--that is why stopped singing "Maria" in concert some time ago, and he has admitted such in many interviews.

But after all, he is now over 70---he cannot be expected to sing the same way he did at 20 or 30.

I already have my Sky-plus set---Looking forward to seeing this, as I practically grew up with Petula Clark in films, radio, and records.

Although at the end of the last show the commentater announced the show as "The Legend that was Petula Clark"---just as though she is not performing now--when I know she is.

I can never watch Jeff Chandler without picturing him in a polka dot dress and pearls-his favourite attire according to Esther Williams & others.
